Reassigning the throttle
-
Hi all, after a long time layoff from F4 I decided to get back in to it. Downloaded and installed BMS. I’m running Win 10 on my new box and seemed to have gotten CCP and Foxy up and running.
The problem is my throttle doesn’t work. Pot is bad I’m sure. Until I can get that fixed I need to re-assign the throttle. I’d like to put it on the Antenna rotary for the time being. I could also use the “-” and “=” keys if necessary.
In F4:AF I used a Jagstang file that I had modified to some extent. From the little I’ve read, it seems that the Dunc files are the ones to use in BMS. Or I’m open to suggestions if you feel there’s a better one. At this stage any file is fine since I’m just starting off.
So what I’m asking is how can I re-assign the throttle. Ideally one of you programming experts will post the syntax and instructions for doing so. As mentioned, putting the throttle on the antenna and reassigning ant elevation to the keyboard or even the mouse wheel is my preferred temporary fix. Or I’m open to suggestions. Thanks.

BMS-Manual in your \Docs folders. Check out the sections on Controllers, particularly page 42:
General notes about axis assignment
BMS detects the analogue axes from all connected devices. They can be selected from a dropdown menu. You will only be able to map one in-game axis to one ‘physical’ analogue axis!In other words just select ‘Antenna - Thrustmaster HOTAS Cougar’ from the the dropdown box underneath Throttle Axis (page 51) to make the Antenna rotary your Throttle Axis.
And yes, I’d recommend Dunc_DX (in your \Docs\Key Files & Input\Device Setup Guides & Profiles\TM HOTAS Cougar folder) as a starting point before you do the above changes.

Thanks very much. I am at work a the mo, so forgive me as I lack access to the sim. That sounds perfect. Is this done in-game in the controllers advanced section? If so the antenna axis did not appear or it would be sorted already. Perhaps I did something wrong.

Since this is the first time I’ve used the Cougar in years I believe I haven’t set it up right. I think I need to set it up again and follow some instructions. Firmware, CCP settings, something along those lines. I saw a scrreenshot in a thread while I looked through the forum and indeed there were many axes shown in the throttle dropdown. I have only the Cougar, keyboard and mousewheel as options. The antenna rotary is recognized in Windows, but not by BMS, so I don’t believe I have the stick configured correctly.

Setting up the Cougar in Windows 7/8/(10 too I’m guessing based on your comments): https://www.benchmarksims.org/forum/showthread.php?18336-HOW-TO-INSTALL-THE-HOTAS-COUGAR-FIRMWARE-SOFTWARE-ON-WINDOWS-7-64-BIT
Latest drivers:
https://support.thrustmaster.com/en/product/hotascougar-en/And of course:
http://cougar.flyfoxy.com/Once you’ve got the Cougar set up to your satisfaction just follow the instructions in the Dunc’s Cougar DX Guide manual. Don’t forget if the Antenna rotary is already mapped (to the Antenna Axis for example) it will not show up in the dropdown menu for the Throttle Axis.

Thanks again, I appreciate you helping. I think I have the software installed correctly. CCP runs and recognizes the HOTAS. Foxy runs and compiles as well. I used the software that is something like HCO_2007 which was the most recent I was able to find.
if the Antenna rotary is already mapped (to the Antenna Axis for example) it will not show up in the dropdown menu for the Throttle Axis.
That could be it right there.

And it was already assigned to antenna elevation. Go figure. Thanks again.

DB,
You have two options (at least) to restore your TQS throttle Z-axis:
1. Buy a throttle pot from TM Customer Support via their tech support contact site
2. Replace the analog pot with a Hall effect sensor ic and a rare earth magnet. (Search on MilesD here in this forum) -
If you do decide to replace the pot, you can probably match one up at Digikey (or another more local supplier). I purchased a couple dozen similar pots for my revised ICP modules and when I had my cougar disassembled (had to replace the antenna pot and I made a throttle arm mod) I held them up along side one another and they looked exact to me. If you do remove your pot and want to compare to the ones that I bought let me know and I will post the exact measurements. The pots that Digikey has would need to have the metal mounts removed (really easy to do).

Thanks AV8R and Propnut. I will need to get it fixed. Ya know, this happened a long time ago and I actually did get a replacement pot from TM. I am sure I have it, but where? It wasn’t long after that I shelved F4 and flight sims so I didn’t get around to replacing it. Wish I had now.
I have Hall Sensors (Titanium Evenstrain) in the stick. Probably a good idea to go that route if I can’t find my pot. That sounds a little shady. Cause if I do find the pot, then finding the pot might be more challenging

Well all things go to pot eventually.
