CBU-97 woes
-
Been trying to hit enemy concentrations with CBU-97 and getting only maybe a third of releases working. Not sure what I’m doing wrong. Other more experienced pilots I fly with are having the same issues.
CBU-97 is set with 2,000 feet burst height, pairs release, 1.5 second delay. F16 Block 50, target locked on GM radar, aircraft is at 20,000 feet, between 350 and 450 knots, slightly nose down (2-3 degrees), fall line right through the FPM. At about 10 miles get the loft cue, then soon after that the fall line comes down again, I hold weapon release when its almost touching the FPM and hold through the fall, no manoeuvring. Sometimes (1 in 3 runs) I get my pair off, but the rest of the time the fall line comes down through where the release should occur then travels back up and off dry.
Any ideas as to what is happening?
Also, debrief says I hit two bunkers, tacview says I hit two T62s…?

The tolerances for bomb release in CCRP are pretty tight, and at 20k you need to really have the FPM on the line, and keep it there. Any deviation will result in not hitting the release parameters. Releasing from higher altitudes in CCRP is extremely finicky.

Not CBU specific, but one small tip I recently learned, is to apply a little back pressure on the stick (pull about 1.1G) for the release. Helps avoid chance of random turbulence or autopilot maneuvering briefly under-G’ing the plane as you fly through the release cue.
