Only 1 hat-switch, what to use it for? DMS or TMS?
-
I have a Thrustmaster T-Flight HOTAS X and it has only one hat-switch. Would you recommend me to use it as DMS or TMS? and then use the keyboard for the other option?
Or is there a better way to do it (without having to buy another joystick)?
I think i would prefer to use the mouse/right button as in-game point-of-view.
Thanks in advance.

Hi, you could use the stick in combination with a T.A.R.G.E.T profile (free software provided by Thrustmaster) or using DirectX, which would allow assigning more than one function to the hat and all other switches. Check this thread for more information: https://www.benchmarksims.org/forum/showthread.php?24024-Thrustmaster-T-Flight-Hotas-X&highlight=T-Flight

I would recommend joystick gremlin and shift states. It would take a bit of work, but is easier to use and less buggy than TARGET.
In this way, you could set up three or four shift states; no buttons pressed and the hat is TMS, button X is pressed and the hat is DMS, button Y is pressed and the hat is CMS, etc.

I concur with starfuryth here, avoid TARGET if you can. Joystick gremlin is much more flexible and a dream to use once you have the initial setup down.

I will just quote myself
When I started out with my Wingman Digital Extreme, at the bare minimum I would map:
trigger (second detent, fires gun)
TMS up (locks)
TMS down (unlocks)
CMS up (activates countermeasure program)
DMS down (to change sensor of interest)
Pickle/weapon release (obvious)
Trim left/right (after you drop a bomb you will have to trim)Furthermore, its useful to know where on your keyboard to find:brakes, Nosewheel steering, rudder, gear. view switching with the numbers. Comms (awacs, wingman, element, flight, tower tanker -> Q,W,E,R,T,Y)
Have a look in the manual at the actual F16 HOTAS setup. In the beginning I would focus on the stick controls (DMS, TMS, CMS, nosewheelsteer and pinky). Once you get comfortable with what these controls do, move to the throttle and see what’s there. The training mission descriptions should learn you step by step which to use where.
good luck, hope this helps.
If you have plenty of buttons, I would also map DMS up (HUD sensor of interest), DMS left and right (to quickly switch MFD pages) and TMS right for better control of the TGP/FCR. Naturally if you plan to fly online: UHF and VHF comm PTT.

TMS. You will need it in stressful situations.
With built in SimPinkyHotasShift or TARGET you should have as many HOTAS controls at your fingertips as possible. But even then you have to decide which are direct and which are shifted and TMS is way more important than DMS. Back when I had only 2 hats for 4 hat functions I had TMS, trim as primary and DMS, CMS as their shifted states respectively.

when I was using one hat, I had TMS up and down, and DMS left and right. It worked for me.
I guess if BMS ever gets around to modelling some of the newer radar modes, I would want TMS right as well, so Id have to recommend all TMS then.

Using dx shifted buttons in the keyfile works wonders, but Joystick gremmlin is very nice according to users, i just like doing stuff manually and the hard way

A lot of thanks to everybody, this is exactly what i wanted to know! Amazing, really fast and excellent responses in just one day!

Thank you. I used to play Falcon 3.0 in the 90’s. It is amazing how it evolved. I am just learning right now but if i want to play online i guess i will have to buy a better joystick.
