AAMRAM
-
Was watching a 90’s documentary on YouTube this morning. They were describing how the AAMRAM worked in the F-16. The doc claimed that once a bandit was locked and missile had been fired the F-16 could then turn off the radar, offset 30-40 degrees and periodically “blink” the radar on and off updating the missile when the radar was turned back on until it activated its own radar effectively making it harder for the enemy bandit to keep his situational awareness. Haven’t had time to try this myself but does the AIM 120 work like this in the sim? From what i know if I was to silence my radar after launch the missile would go lose and pick up the first radar target it could find.

3:00 to 4:20 (timestamp)Interesting. I would like to know more about this myself. He mentioned that the Viper pilot would blink his radar on and off to protect himself from ARM’s. I didn’t think ARM’s could attack A/A targets, maybe an AWACS ? Unless he was talking about other A/A missiles, but those aren’t ARM’s are they ?

I think what is refered to is not ‘turning it on/off’. It rather is painting the target periodically (as with a soft lock in SAM or TWS) instead of STT or continuous wave illumination, required by a fox-1.

Curious….makes sense. TWS allows multiple launch and track of aim missiles correct? So the TWS is a soft lock and the bandit would not know a launch had occurred until the missile itself went active?

Indeed. Except if his RWR is able to pickup the datalink itself.

I think Ive got to get into the habit of using TWS more. Not sure why but I have always leaned on STT heavily in my time with BMS. Starting to see how that has put me at a disadvantage.

what they are referring to is electronic modulation , In older thoughts it might have been thought of as an “on off” type of situation, realistically, advanced radars especially electronically scanned arrays do this automatically and more complex convolutions of these techniques contribute to the employment of the WCS in stealth aircraft.
incidentally I believe every model 120 besides the A is programed with coordinates off the rail it uses as reference, I know that the 120 has been majorly upgraded in functionality between multiple flights and friendly fighters, there are even rumors of lofting capability and painting using the 35 as a FAC and the einstein box as a hub between the legacy and the stealth fleet.
I think if anything this is an ancien selling point that was outdated with different fighting modality, more than anything as opposed to technological constraint.

Thank you for that information. I enjoy all things military aviation. With that said doesnt BMS run off of outdated technology/procedures? Brings me back to me original post…does it work that way in the sim and if it does how exactly is it achieved? Im leaning towards the TWS and discussed previously. I will have to try it for myself once i get a little more free time.
