Altitude in TD box?
-
Hi gents,
I’m sure this video has probably seen the rounds,
but apart from the lucky fellow’ s tentative efforts on the controls i am curious about the digits displayed under the TD box around the 9:30 mark.
Is this a altitude display from the data link? or being displayed from the radar? Is this implemented in BMS?
Any info would be great
Thanks

altitude, determined by the FCR I believe.
EDIT: pretty confident that is altitude to the nearest thousand there.
1.9.13.5.3 To aid in visually acquiring the target, the HUD positions either a large target designator box (target within HUD field of view) or a target locator line (target outside HUD field of view) based on target position data from the radar. The target designator box (or locator line) is solid if the radar is tracking the target or dashed if the radar has entered the coast mode (Figure 1-154). The air-to-air target designator box is not corrected for canopy distortions but the target should fall within the box. Anytime the target is outside the HUD field of view, the target designator box is replaced by a target locator line and angle. The target altitude is displayed directly below the TD box or below the locator angle.
2.7.2.6.2 HUD Target Designator Box and Locator Line. The HUD displays the target designator box or locator line when a target is acquired via the radar as an aid in visual target acquisition. Display of either radar symbol is solid if target track is normal or dashed if the radar has entered coast (Figure 2-323) or breaklock imminent (Figure 2-324). The display of a dotted target designator box or dotted target locator line is used as an aid in ACM/RWR target acquisition. The 40-mr HUD locator line is positioned from the boresight cross and extends toward the radar target (Figure 2-323 and Figure 2-324). The angle from the boresight cross to the radar target is digitally displayed at the end of the target locator line.
2.7.2.6.2.1 The target altitude is displayed in two digits to represent altitude to the nearest 1000 feet and is displayed below the TD box or below the angle readout when the target locator line is displayed. So yeah. Altitude. From the radar.
Im more interested in the answer to your other question, about whether it might get added to BMS

That looks to me like it is saying the target locked is 03L which is 30 degrees to the left. When you see the TD box you see 10 which is the altitude.

Agreed on both counts with elmo. Undoubtedly the altitude in the HUD is sourced from the same place that you’d see displayed on the FCR bug.

No that is the aspect angle . You are confusing it with offset angle.

1.9.13.5.3 To aid in visually acquiring the target … The target altitude is displayed directly below the TD box or below the locator angle.
2.7.2.6.2.1 The target altitude is displayed in two digits to represent altitude to the nearest 1000 feet and is displayed below the TD box or below the angle readout when the target locator line is displayed.
No, Im pretty sure it is supposed to be the altitude under the TD box.

It is target altitude
target altitude is removed from the HUD ( TA XX above RALT), and is displayed under the TD box, and under the gun cross when the TLL comes into play.
I think Elmo is also talking about the aspect angle in DFGT mode. -
So, I guess this is a thing only on newer blocks/tapes?

correct

Thanks for the info guys
Not the most important thing to observe but i found it interesting.
