Cat 3 approach without ILS is not possible
-
How can I perform an Cat 3 approach without ILS if the Tacan or reference point of the Airport is not centerlined with the RWY ?
-
Do you mean Cat 1 ILS? Without ILS you have to fly a TACAN approach or a visual.

You are duplicating the discussion …
CAT III is not allowed nor “possible” (requirements) on an F-16 anyway.
Because it is a sim … IRL you would not do this because 1 - this is forbidden 2 - you don’t want to die.
The only case a pilot would maybe try that is as an ultimate solution if no more possible diversion and no other mean to land on a bad weather situation. In that kind of extreme case, maybe a planned/controlled ejection would be smarter depending on actual runway environments.
Note that Tacan and ILS are different things. One can perform an ILS final without any Tacan … so the location of he Tacan do not matter at all.

you can maybe mimic Dan Hampton’s Viper-Pilot ad-hoc way of trying to land at an airfield without ILS, but you would need to be able see the runway so that’s no CATIII either; anyway, if you’re not happy with the tacan beacon position for whatever reason and there is no ILS present, identify the threshold of the runway (visually), create an O-FLY mark point there and use that for reference.

That"s great, thanks a lot

It’s a sim after all, so it’s fun to try stuff like that. Probably a wise man once said though that it’s better to divert to an ILS capable alternate when you can.

If you have the precise location of the runway, say its lat/long and you have high confidence in your navigation solution, then you can do this without visual reference. Not ‘legal’ as such, but its the closest thing to what Dan describes, which is actually possible in the aircraft.

So … I think we will have to better implement IRS drift and GPS’s HIL / coverage hole in the future! … why not GPS jamming aso.

Not in BMS too, please :-)))

Yes please, not mega relevant in modern blocks ex. GPS jamming and abnormal ins (inu) drift, but if the fix and acal pages are on some kind of shortlist for devs the old blocks would become very popular instantly I’d imagine.

GPS jamming is the only way to cut it out entirely DJ… don’t need an INS if you have GNSS with RAIM and a 3D RNAV approach… newer versions of the 217 vol 3 are looking interesting.

Currently, even with an RAIM anti spoofed military (L1 + L2 with Y code) GPS you can loose the signal. IRS remains then the only (nearly 100% reliable) autonomous way to get a good positioning (+/- internal drift)

agreed… which is why I was saying that the only way to require people to account for drift was to have GPS jamming…
Id be pretty thrilled to see A-CAL and FIX pages working and useful in the future

Don’t hold your breath too much. I was just chitchatting. There is no plan for that yet.

This is my secret technique to living: I dont hold my breath for BMS releases
Otherwise, Id probably have asphyxiated sometime last Christmas.
