Trouble assigning keyboard commands
-
Hi,
I can’t seem to assign keyboard commands in the setup menu, I have selected the dropdown menu for keyboard as opposed to other connected devices. I then select the appropriate command and press the key i want to assign and it won’t bind. Instead the menu for keys just jumps and scrolls down to some random position.
Thanks

It’s because you are holding down a joystick button so it is instantly binding this held joystick button instead of waiting for your keyboard input.

You don’t “[select] the dropdown menu for keyboard as opposed to other connected devices”. You connect the devices you’ll fly with and set the keybinds, rotaries, axes, etc. You select the main HOTAS for both keyboard and HOTAS commands, as well as whatever else is on your HOTAS (rotaries, throttle, Pitch, etc.).

Aha I know what it is, I forgot my saitek throttle has a broken button on it that is permanently held down been a while since i flew the sim with it. That means it won’t as you say input keyboard binds because the button on the joystick is permanently depressed. Possible anyway seems the most likely. Thanks for the replies!

Doesn’t seem to be the problem, my X-52 throttle is disconnected so that broken button isn’t interfering which is what I thought was causing the problem. Instead I’m using the throttle on the CH combatstick. I’m also not holding down any joystick buttons when i enter keyboard assignments either. Also I can assign axes in the advanced menu fine it’s simply keyboard bindings. When I enter a binding other than save I always click apply and when i’m done I save the configuration. I’m at a loss!
Basically I don’t have enough buttons on the joystick device/s to assign DMS up, right, down and tms up, right, down. Not enough buttons for vertical scan and boresight etc. also by default BMS seems to have the radar cursor up down etc. not assigned to the arrow keys.
anyway let me know what you think

My Two cent, I assume that when you select a function say “A” equal auto pilot and you want to change it to another key it jumps. If that new key is already bound to a function as most keys in BMS are, it will jump to that (now vacant spot) key and state no function but the key you just bound will be correct. Hope that makes sense. The no function will show up where the key was assigned and at the bottom of the matrix. I have a warthog but I don’t run a script I use the GUI, keystrokes in BMS, I was having trouble with the Air brake closing, Ctrl b I substituted Ctrl b with h, h was for the HSI but now it reads no function where the “h” key was on the left side of the matrix the problem was with the windows general short cut key bindings, every time I left the Air brake open position the desktop would change my icon selection, clicking on Netflix opened acrobat and so on until I closed the air brake. I mention this because maybe you have so hotkeys or shortcut keys that are interfering with your selection
Last question are the keys you select turning a cyanide blue when you select them ?are you using the left side of the matrix to select if not that part of the problem. If you are using the BMS keystrokes the left side stays a ash color and no phrase (“no function”) shows up if bound to a controller button. Even though you are using the keyboard for most of your key binds you have to select the joystick that appears under the controller dropdown menu after you made your selections. My two cents, hope it helps many more experienced personnel here than I if I feed you something wrong the will correct me, believe me, remember my callsign is Weaklink

I can confirm that when i hit a key that exists it jumps to that key and when I select the left matrix it goes blue and when i deselect.
Do I have to select a completely unbound key on my keyboard in order to bind an existing key command in the sim and replace it? in other words if A for autopilot is in use as key A I have to select an unbound key first rather than a say 1 which is already a hud mode? if so I feel very foolish and also that will take some time to change the keys to my own custom mode.
Let me know and thanks for taking the time to help

Hey Snipe, sounds like you are doing it right, after you save the command, key binding you want, just select that new key bind and see if what you wanted shows up in the matrix, that means it has been switched.
You should notice that the keystrokes are carefully set up so that important keys are single letters or digits Secondary keys slightly lower in importance are Combination keys composed of Shift, ALT, Ctrl keys with a one letter or number suffix, (Crtl b), SHift S).
Now if you have a mouse with your system substituting any key is fine, any key in the original key file can be accessed by the mouse in the cockpit. Example, With my old screen HUD color was important, sometimes in flight I could not see the HUD letters and numbers so I needed a key bind that was quick. The original key bind for HUD color was SH+ctrl +Alt+ C at least the one I wanted to change. I chose F10 which was bound to Radar GM Picture Freeze. Having been a navigator for 20 years I never ever use the freeze mode in flight. so it was a good choice for me. I made the switch and now I can change HUD color by pushing F10. If I need to freeze the GM radar scope FZ is available on the approximate MFD keys of the GM radar Scope.
What this means is that any key can be substituted in the key matrix. and the corresponding function is still available in game. The only keys I know of that should not be changed or more likely can’t be changed are Q, W, E, R, T, and Y all tied to radio menu in flight/or ground.
I flown many sims and the key strokes are fairly logical and very little substitution is needed. But if you wish to substitute keys in BMS I would only substitute 1. Necessary keys that cause system problems outside the game, Ctrl b cause me grief when left in the activate position after leaving the game, this caused the desktop to run away and other strange things. So in this case I substituted Ctrl b for something else “h” and it works fine. 2. Key stokes that are multi keystrokes that I feel I need access to immediately, Hud Color (SH+ctrl +Alt+ C ) now F10. If you do not have a mouse the game is going to be tough, My Warthog can take about 200 plus commands but with a mouse you have access to all switches and buttons. Put only the needed functions in your controller and throttle and use the keyboard for the rest. Keep track of what you change from -to so you make adjustments if necessary.
One last thing stay away from the HOTAS KEYS that is, don’t change them most of them in game have multi /sequencing functions and changing them may cause errors.
In the end your key binding is yours, but the logical key bind was written for the game, get a few flights in the game. Use the key board commands, use the Training flights, see what you need to change and leave alone. This game can be flown without a joystick, throttle and mouse, Although key board wizard comes to mind.
Hope this helps if you need anymore help just write.Weaklink
