PPT radii and names
-
Initially posted this in the “Link 16”-topic, but I’m repeating it here, as requested by I-Hawk:
@I-Hawk:Hi Eagle, this kind of request sounds actually more like a bug (or at least, wrong behavior) than a feature. Can you please open a dedicated thread in the technical forum about this issue? Possibly it’ll not be swallowed in this huge thread.
Any chance we could move away from relying on the ppt.ini names to get the radius for a PPT, as every mission_name.ini contains all the necessary information already?
e.g. ppt_0=1592734.125000, 1815195.250000, 0.000000, 48608.925781, AAA = position (X, Y, Z), circle radius (in ft), PPT text to show.Major benefit would be that everyone can adjust their own PPT as desired (e.g. have less- to non-cluttering text, like just a 2, 3, 4 instead of SA2, SA3, SA4) without losing the possibility to share or receive mission_name.ini to / from other players, and not being sure if (s)he has a PPT with the same name in the ppt.ini. (as it will not show if the other player does not have an entry with that name, but it will show the original radius even if his/her value is different)
Or we could have multiple same-name PPTs, with different radii. (which I’ve been told is no problem IRL)
ppt_0=883788.250000, 1613331.750000, 0.000000, 91141.734375, . ppt_1=883788.250000, 1613331.750000, 0.000000, 151902.890625, . ppt_2=883788.250000, 1613331.750000, 0.000000, 212664.046875, .
will get you this work of art:
Right now, what you see on that picture only works until you save the DTC. Once you’ve saved the DTC in 2D, which is required for Comms and IFF Plan, it will check the ppt.ini for “.”, take the first value it finds, apply or repeat that to all PPTs with that name, and you end up with 3 PPTs with identical position and radius the next time you fly this mission.

Just remembered I made this topic nearly a year ago, and wanted to see if this made 4.35 or not. My first impression is: both yes and no.
For testing purposes, I added this to the PPT.ini:
T 60761.1572265625 Test T 160761.1572265625 Test T 320761.1572265625 Test T 600761.1572265625 Test
I then made a TE with those 4 PPTs, giving me this Mission.ini:
ppt_0=2231111.500000, 2557699.500000, 0.000000, 60761.156250, T ppt_1=2009912.500000, 2557699.750000, 0.000000, 160761.156250, T ppt_2=1528551.250000, 2552525.250000, 0.000000, 320761.156250, T ppt_3=607857.250000, 2551579.250000, 0.000000, 600761.187500, T
Now, when I check 2D, no matter how many times I exit the TE, restart BMS or even my entire PC, it will show the following, which looks promising, as it does actually keep the proper radius value for each PPT, even if they have the same indicator and name:
Unfortunately, when I enter 3D and check in-pit, I see this.
Checked the Mission.ini afterwards, and it still had the ppt_1 - _4 values listed above, incl. their radius, so it appears BMS is still referencing the PPT.ini, rather than the Mission.ini and setting the first size it finds?
Sent the files to someone else to check, without them adjusting their ppt.ini to include the new PPT variables, and the PPTs are not shown at all in either 2D or 3D, again indicating it’s looking for data in the PPT.ini.
