EEGS / dogfight mode question
-
I’ve never been much of a dogfighter … I learned how to uncage and launch a sidewinder, and that’s it.
Trying to fill this gap and get acquainted with EEGS symbology. So I dropped into TR#17 (IR Intercept)… here I am just following along behind the transport.
What does it mean when the funnel points upward, to the sky? I’m just flying 1G relatively straight and level here, not pulling downward (you’d see negative Gs if that were the case). If I maneuver a bit, bank left or right, or pull up or down on the stick, the funnel still appears “stuck” upward.
If I do TMS-down to drop the radar lock, the EEGS funnel falls back downward, and behaves generally as I’d expect as I maneuver the plane around.
TMS-up/right to reacquire the lock, and the EEGS goes back into its skyward-pointing mode.
I’ve RTFM’d including Real Manuals\Korea_BEM_Vol5.pdf and all 5 of the EEGS symbology levels… but I can’t figure out what I’m seeing, or what I’m doing wrong here.
Is this a bug? Why would the funnel (projected path of bullet) change shape or orientation, based on whether there’s a radar lock or not?

Okay, the funnel doesnt show the projected path of the shells. Thats the misconception.
The Firing Evaluation Display System (FEDS) shows the projected path of shells fired, and is used in level II (no lock). In level III and up, the Bullets At Target Range (BATR) symbol is used instead to show where bullets passed the target.
In level II and III, the funnel works very similarly to with LCOS. It does NOT show where the bullets will travel. In levels II and III, it shows a range of valid solutions for the current normal acceleration (G) in plane, with the wingspan currently selected being used as the gap between the lines of the funnel. In level IV and V, the funnel is in the targets plane of motion (POM) rather than your POM.
Thing is, your target isnt maneuvering, so picking their plane of motion is a bit of a crapshoot.
I guess Id suggest having another look at the EEGS symbology levels explanations, particularly the explanation of how the funnel works? The short version is that the funnel isnt showing you where the bullets will go, its showing you how much lead you need - and once you have a radar lock, it starts showing you the lead in the plane of motion of the target - which is VERY useful for figuring out how much lead you need to pull when you are not in the targets POM, such as for snapshots.

Thanks … yeah here’s the key phrase I glossed over – buried in a paragraph about noise-filtering.
EEGS Level IV.
. . .
The funnel retains its original shape but now responds to target maneuvers and is parallel to the target’s POM.I guess this particular target is just flying straight and level, so it doesn’t really have a meaningful POM. The Level V circular pipper is still accurate, and that’s all that’s needed for a non-maneuvering target.
Rendering the “funnel” symbology in L4/L5 is a strange choice. I guess I’ll move on to spar against maneuvering targets, to try to appreciate what it’s showing me…

It lets you fairly quickly appreciate where you need to get the nose, in order to establish lead for accurate snapshots out of plane. If you are in plane with the target, you dont really notice the difference.

I find the beginning of Instant Action good for this, has all types of targets and unlimited ammo (but not fuel unless you set it… I think)… but they WILL shoot back. As time goes on fighters get thick as flies so you will need missiles though.
