Solved Connect 2 PCs (behind the same router) to a server?
-
Hello, I could not find the answer to this question yet. My son would like to join me on a BMS server. Thing is, our PCs are connected to the internet through the same router as he’s living with us. Would someone know how to manage the port forwarding? Thanks!

In this case you won’t need any port forwarding at all. Your son’s PC should be able to talk to your BMS server if it’s on the same internal network (usually something like 192.168.0.0/24 for most routers).
Make sure to turn off the windows firewall on both server and client or add firewall exceptions for the BMS ports.
Cheers, Uwe

Oops, I did not mention: the server is not on the LAN, that would be a public server.

If it’s a public server you can connect to the server’s official IP address on both BMS clients. I think the port forwarding setup is only needed if you plan to host BMS on a server internal to your LAN to the public internet.
Just give it a try and let us know if it works.

That simple? OK, I’ll try

Yep, it should work. Your router will keep track of the outgoing NATted connections to the internet (in this case the BMS server) and sort the incoming packets accordingly.
Cheers,
Uwe

@hoover sadly I think it may not be so simple … BMS uses UDP not TCP
many modern NAT routers are "smart* and can make udp work seamlessly, for a single PC… but not multiple local PCs talking to same server
I suspect one of you may need to use a VPN to get a distinct IP address

Hmm, I would expect NATting to work for multiple clients for both tcp and udp, but let’s see what Jolly’s testing results in.

Both Clients can connect to the server, but only one client will be able to enter the 3D world.

Hi
I belive it can work beacuse of PAT (NAPT) , which you dont need to set up this is a automatism with in the router.
But anyways this case is also interessting for meEdit: I forgot to mention if you have set Port Forwarding it can’t work. So deconfigure it befor testing

So, I believe I had been overthinking this. We tried yesterday and we both could connect to the server (VG btw) in 2D AND in 3D. Could not fly as wifey called, but it looked like everything worked fine.
Ah, yep, only my main “gaming desktop” was referenced on the router for port forwarding, not my son’s laptop. And we did not check IVC…
In any case, I’d put this topic as resolved.
