Anyone can help me with setting up my HOTAS X for BMS?
-
I am extremely new to BMS and realistic A2A combat in general, mostly did flight simming on vatsim for the past 2 years now and I got interested in BMS. Tried following a tutorial online and I am already having headaches cause I just can’t find any way to get modifiers on BMS. Anyone can help? Thank you

@Damir If you are using 4.37 version of BMS, all keypresses and axis definitions are set up via the launcher. I’m not fluent on your HOTAS set up but basically you will need trim, TMS, DMS and CMS set up on the stick along with trigger(s) 1 & 2, and pickle switch for AA or AG weapons release. There was a definition of this in the old Dash 1 manual, not sure if it is in the 4.37 version.
No reason to use your own specific keyfile on 4.37 onward.
Hope this helps,
Duke

Just to avoid doubt, there is only 1 shift layer for joystick buttons in BMS. In the new Alt Launcher setup menu look for “Pinky Switch (DX Shift)” then bind that to a button or keypress.

@Damir For simpler joysticks with a single hat, like HOTAS X, there are some new specialized bindings for the TMS/DMS/CMS etc switches, using a 4-layer shift mechanism.
If I had a stick with a single hat, and 2 or 3 extra buttons on the throttle or base to act as shift-buttons, I think I’d look into doing that. It really helps to have TMS, DMS, CMS and cursor all on the hotas.

@Damir First, Welcome to BMS!
I’m with Airtex, definitely make use of the Dx Pinky (shift). Take your time, and try different layouts to see what works for you. Personal preference, what works for you, is a big part of this process. Also, look in DOCs at the Dash-34,page 11-17 is a good start) . With DX shifting, here’s my .02…
Note: The DX Pinky shift controls your FOV with quick press and Shift when held- TMS-on hat, unshifted and DMS on hat,(shifted)
Or, 2) Go “Hornet Style”. I have a Warthog, but since I like TMS and DMS on a Hornet-like “Sensor Control Switch” I set TMS up ,DMS left, right, and down as unshifted and DMS UP, TMS left, right, and down as shifted.
Two problems with the above -1) You need a cursor. One option is if you use the stick twist for rudder, then use the tilting lever for cursor ( see 8 below)
-2) View control if you don’t have Track Ir. If you don’t I seriously recommend you get it. (See 8 below)
3a)MRM and DFT and Cancel-One button each unshifted and cancel on both(shifted).
Or, 3b) The 4.37 Launcher has an option you can set where a rocker switch can be “self cancelling”. IF that is the case, then MRM/DFT to the Tilt button. If it works, then definitely use this option. - Uncage- button unshifted and NWS A/R (shifted). Or. vice versa
- CMS- Options -CMS up-button/CMS down (shifted)
And -button-CMS Left/CMS Right(shifted) (see (8) below)
CMS Up controls Prog 1, and Left controls Prog6. I set CMS Chaff Prog 1 for one chaff no flare, and Prog 6 to no chaff and one flare. But, that is personal preference. - Speedbrake-options-a) button- toggle/wheel brakes (shifted)
or b) button- speedbrake-open /Close(shifted)
Note:If you have rudder pedals, then the whole brake thing becomes a lot easier - Comms-option -button-Comms Up(UHF)/ Comms Down (VHF) -shifted
button- Comms left/Comms right(shifted)
8- The reason for all the “see 8 below” ‘s is I’d be real surprised if you can put both cursor axis’ on the tilt knob. Besides, I really hope the cancelling tilt knob works.
In that case -option- throttle buttons 5-8 -View u/d/l/r/ cursor U/d/l/r (shifted)
If I counted right, that’s your 12 buttons(counting dx shift( or 10 if the self cancelling works).
This is working off pictures, and I have no idea how the “Exclusive Preset Button” works, but hopefully this will get you flying
- TMS-on hat,unshifted and DMS on hat,(shifted)
