IR Missiles Basic Training
-
Hello
I’m new to the forum and getting back into Falcon after a very long time. BMS is much more realistic than Falcon 4.0 and I’m having trouble with the basics.
What I’m trying to do. Just get into instant action to get some quick dogfights, while I go through the documentation to re-learn how to fly the F-16.
I’m trying to use the IR missiles without having the seeker slaved to the radar (I have to re-learn how to use the radar yet). I want to have the seeker at the front in the HUD and point the aircraft at the target. Just the most basic thing to do.
What I’m doing:
- Press: TQS: Dogfight Switch - DF Override
- Press: RDR Cursor - (I tried Cursor Enable, Cursor Zero, Toggle Stop Movement)
- Press: MAN Range Knob - UNCAGE
I manage to get target lock, but it’s purely random. I don’t know what I’m doing wrong.
Also I would like to know what is the keybind to switch between the AIM-9M and the AIM-9X. Somehow I remembered how to switch them from the MFD, but I don’t now what is the keybind to do it.
I apologize if this is in the wrong section. This is my first post.

Set the AIM-9 into “BORE” to ensure that the seeker when caged is aligned to the airplane boresight (or the HMCS when used). “SLAVE” is to slave to the radar LOS. You can set this on the SMS format and holding the enable switch will alternate to the opposite selection while held.
AA missile types can be changed hands on by a long press of the MSL STEP switch.

This sounds about right, actually… especially if it’s cloudy weather. It’s customary to yell “I can’t get a f-king tone!” on the radio while repeatedly struggling to get the seeker to track, uncaged.
(half joking)
In all seriousness, mastering the various modes of the various sidewinders is probably one of the hardest things, in the sim. Instant-Action might not be best… I recommend jump into training mission TR#17 which starts in-air, 30 nm ahead of a cargo transport plane. Use that to hone your sidewinder skills, including getting used to how the clouds affect the seeker.
