Google DDS plugin for Photoshop (allows you to open and save DDS files). Download the LOD editor, find the aircraft you want to mod. View textures (this gives you the texture DDS numbers, e.g. 2858.) Look in Object folder for the corresponding DDS files and view in Photoshop. I would back up the originals. Edit, save. Open 3D viewer in LOD to view changes.

Once I figured that out it was pretty simple to make adjustments.

For that all I really did was apply a dark grey layer over the surface of the plane and adjusted opacity until I got something I liked. I am still playing with it.
