Looking for some technical advise. I just bought a new system equipped with two 250Gb SSDs and one 1Tb HDD. I have the OS (Win 7 Prof) installed on the primary SSD and plan to have FSX with addon scenery installed on the second SSD. Where should I install BMS 4.33 for maximum performance? There is still plenty of space left on the OS SSD. Should I install it there or on the HDD. I would prefer to leave the second SSD dedicated to FSX. If my thought process is wrong, please chime in. I’m aware that install location may not have any effect on FPS, but I would just like my system to operate efficiently.

BTW - I’m not very computer savvy. I just know enough to be dangerous.

      Thank you.

SSD will not affect fps directly. it will however allow to load faster, and to load up needed textures quicker then with the HDD.

if you can spare the space. install on SSD.
leave the HDD for recording videos and stuff 🙂

I’ll echo what uri_ba says, and add that IMO what you really want to look for is durability - how many read/write cycles your SSD drive can perform as impacts mean time to failure (or MTBF). Considering this aspect, I’m a fan of the Samsung 850 Pro series - 500G or larger.

The SSDs are Samsung 850 Pro series. In fact here’s the break down.

            Intel Core i7 6700K 4.0GHz Overclocked to 4.4GHz
            ASUS Z170 PRO GAMING motherboard
            16GB DDR4 2666MHz Corsair Vengeance LPX
            2x SSD (250GB Samsung 850 Pro Series)
1x Storage (1TB Western Digital - Black Edition)
            1x NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 4GB

…great start - I do favor the larger drives, though. If you start augmenting and adding on to your basic sims (like building a cockpit) or installing more than one sim, you’ll likely find that you end up filling up a 256 with the sim and supporting utilities. Seems one can never have enough storage on hand.

I dont know if my way is best but it works really nice.

First SSD = Win10 64 bit installed, this drive is only for operating system

Second SSD = for Falcon and other sim’s , this drive only for simulation games.

Third SSD = for programs and other games

Finally HDD for everything else, my shadowplay records here etc…

BMS runs great, no stutters or anything.

…very nice indeed, but I’m building a full cockpit tub at present, so the feeling is generally short lived.

If you have the ability with your MOBO, I’d put the OS on an M.2 SSD…that’s faster…I’d abandoned that idea myself because I’d read things about M.2 SSDs being prone to overheating, but with the approach you’re using that may be a fair solution as far as just hosting the OS goes. And I may re-think my own build - still planning to grab a 1 TB Samsung 850 Pro to hold my software.

Your SSD will out-live your system. The weak point is the rotating hard drive. I wouldn’t use it for anything other than backup storage.

Yes, my oldest SSD is 7 years old now and still going strong 🙂 Everyday OS drive in our second computer and even index system is in use 🙂

I guess Haukka’s setup is similar to mine:

                                      • First SSD (60GB) came with the new gaming rig a few years ago (60GB), plus an old 500GB SATA drive I had lying around

                                      • Second SSD followed a year later (120GB) and was used for BMS and rFactor2

                                      • Third SSD (250GB) was purchased the weekend 4.33 hit the virtual shelves… I just knew I had to get more SSD space 😉

                                      Cheers, Uwe

Its interesting that the design/construction characteristics are such that the larger they are the better the performance.

I must admit to having a desire for a 250/512 Meg Stainless Steel Drive.
