Back to playing BMS been a while.

Not game breaking, but as far as I was concerned, definitely simulation breaking. It is good they are taking steps to fix some of those things - some studios simply dont even try.

What things bothered you about CMANO that limited the simulation?
-
I used to hang out in Baloogan’s Jabbr room playing CMANO. I haven’t actually tried Canary’s Cage - have you played through Operation Lightning Strike?
Loved Harpoon 1 and 2.
But CMANO is ridiculously overpriced andso have not gotten it, much as I enjoy the genre.

Some small things, some not so small. Fighter aircraft mostly share kinematics. Same acceleration, same top speed, same service ceiling… acceleration incredibly high, climbs incredibly slow, inability to run down a foe in a less capablr aircraft.
None of those things are a massive issue for a game, but for a sim marketed as being ‘relentless realism’ and at the price they charged, certain aspects of it were not up to the admittedly high standard I expected.
With that said its a good game, and one whose value keeps increasing, what with the updates and improvements. Used to be a number of other things I complained about in CMANO, and the devs went and fixed most of them. So theres that.

There are differences between most a/c in kinematics in terms of agility and average climb rate but i would agree in that too many fighter/attack a/c seem to have 925 kts as their top speed. There are some good examples of differing speeds though such as the AV-8B Harrier not having afterburners with top speed of 570 kts. In Canarys Cage they couldnt chase down some Mirages as they were too slow for them. In the last update they’ve implemented weight dependant a/c kinematics so for a/c with heavy bomb loadouts makes them easy pickings for fighters with just a few BVR/WVR missiles. Still i would have expected them to have implemented these things some time ago, however updates are being made continuously and stuff is being implemented. Have to say though now i might not be playing CMANO for some time.

Actually I think AC dependent performance based on loadout was added in 1.07 IIRC. Of course, the loadout system is something else that bugs me. I can appreciate the huge amount of work that went into the program. Certain parts of it are survey sim, and others not quite study sim. From what I understand their sensor modelling is quite detailed. Certainly their shipboard physics is detailed enough. I just get peeved that I cant compare fighter aircraft performance to their respective performancr manuals and get sane figures.
Not really a complaint for a game to worry about - its only for a sim that that is a concern really.
For the case of agility, I have to admit some disappointment in the air to air tactics employed by fighters in CMANO. Id like more control over how they fight, but lacking that Id like more sane default tactics. Though again, this is something the devs have worked to improve, and it shows. Version 1.00 virtually didnt have air tactics, and since then fighters are much smarter, and you have more control over their missions - the mechanics of which are even based on player input! Granted, I still think the Falcon AI is a lot smarter than the CMANO one, but then its not a fair comparison, given the amount of work the F4 AI has had over the decades, and the fact that its a larger part of F4 than it is of CMANO - so in turn, a higher percentage of developer time can be focused on it.
Its a good game, and Im not unhappy for buying it. I do regret the price I paid for it, though I will concede that with updates my opinion of a ‘fair’ price has more than doubled since I purchased it. I do also regret that it was advertised as being something that I think its not - the ‘relentless realism’ taline is not an unreachable goal, but also not one they have reached. On the whole though its not like its bad or unenjoyable in general - there are just a few things that really bug the pedant in me.

I know it is expensive, i bought it in the summer sale on steam for £30 which is half price. With no discount its’ £60 which is $85 US. The thing i’m finding with CMANO is that each new patch will improve the game but something that worked fine before will be bugged- and then gets fixed for the next patch which i find a bit frustrating as then you’re waiting for the next patch.
-
Dont worry, thats how all patches work for everything, not a poor reflection on the CMANO devs!
99 little bugs in the code,
99 little bugs…Take a build down,
patch it around,
Theres 117 little bugs in the code! -
Btw is it just 4.33 that cant be downloaded? can people still download 4.32? just read an angry post from someone who just registered. Even though he sounds less than pleasant maybe he could still have downloaded 4.32 which is still great which is what i’m playing myself…until hopefully 4.33 becomes available again.

I think BMS are presently not making their work available for download here. Presumably the torrents for 4.32 still exist, but they are not linked here out of respect for the BMS team’s wishes.
