Windows 7 to Windows 10 upgrade?
-
Hi there,
Can anybody comment on this from own experience? Switching from Win7 to Win10 via update, hereby keeping installed software and drivers?
How did it work?
Especially with regards to the cougar drivers which very orginally designed for Vista and were a littly tricky to install on Win7…?So if somebody has tried that, please share your experience!
Thanks!

Personally, I upgraded to Windows 10 simply to get the validation. I then created new media and wiped my machine and started from fresh w10.
I’m running bms 4.33.1 on 10 just fine.
Cougar drivers weren’t really tricky providing you follow required steps. All you need to do is run the installer as admin and in vista sp2 compatibility mode. You also need to copy a dll file to system 32 and syswow64 folders.

Well, thats what I call tricky I guess!
Coming from windows 7, I know about the first part (running as admin in vista sp2 mode), but I cannot remember having ever copied a dll… Please can you elaborate on this one?
Also, is this procedure the same for windows 10? Does it even have an “run-as-admin-in-vista-mode” option?Should I decide to upgrade my existing installation, would I have to reinstall the HOTAS drivers or are chances it would still work after the update?
Thanks!

This might help:
It’s pretty much identical for W10.

I upgraded from Win7 Pro 64bit to Win10. All I had to do afterwards to get BMS up and running again was to install the latest Target software for my TM MFD’s. My Cougar and Warthog both functioned OK with no intervention. The other thing I did (but might not be needed) was to stop the USB ports from sleeping.

You shouldn’t have to use TARGET for the Cougar though. In fact, I’d probably recommend not doing so. I just Dx mappings for everything on mine.

Same here. Thanx!

I run a pure DX setup. However the drivers for the MFD’s are part of the TARGET install and the one I had installed with Win7 didn’t work. Personally I think TARGET is a big step backwards for TM and I don’t use it at all if I can help it.

I can’t speak about the Cougar as I don’t own it, but concerning W10 I did the same and have not a single problem, too.
Personally, I would advise you against an in place upgrade as it’s widely known to create every sort of problems and strange behaviors. -
Ran into another windows 10 issue…. GTX 670 gpu needs an enormous amount of work to get working properly in In windows 10. The fault for this lies with Microsoft mostly though as the windows update downloads drivers for any hardware you connect automatically and to suppress that behaviour you have to do some finagling . Windows 10 is fine as long as you don’t run into issues but once you do you will need to have a fairly in depth knowledge of windows on a “power user” level to deal with them. It’s not what I would call user friendly.
Do not fix it if it’s not broken. Windows 7 is supported through to 2020. Take advantage of that. And my advice is to research windows 10 in conjunction with your hardware so you know before hand wether there are any widespread issues that you may encounter

Any point of upgrading for this W7/64 bit user to W10/64?

Only thing I ran into is new graphics drivers upset some add on theaters in win7.
Same new graphic drivers for win10 do not.
However original KTO runs fine in both. So I walked away from that problem confused, and just use old drivers for 7 or new drivers for 10.
Never got to the bottom of why this happens.

Stay with win7 if you value your privacy, if you don’t like forced driver updates, unexpected reboots, “fail” (sic) creator’s updates and if you think your OS should not be turned into an advertising platform.
Plenty of time till 2020, I hope BMS will half-officially support Linux by then
All the best, Uwe
EDIT: If you value your privacy you should probably be running a non MS-OS anyway, but I guess that’s a discussion for another day.

I guess that makes sense…you need to find drivers faster since ‘re-install’ is the new ‘reboot’ for Win10 ?

Ok and to install Falcon u must do it on safe mode boot. Sure u just do it once.
From my experience win 10 is a hog.
They r light in default but when it comes to get the juice out of it many unneeded things just can’t be disabled. Like Cortana. She is not working but is loaded.
The memory footprint is better but HDD is a killer. Also mem manipulation is for med users hey u want to reopen something snap I had it ready.
So I want to run Falcon just reboot and run only Falcon wise.
To get rid of the Mambo jumbo it loads needs much time to find out in the depth of time, not to mention that those stupid updates while getting to download - install ready bring the system to it’s knees. Every time my laptop is suffering for long and look at updates oh here is one.
Drivers yeap Ms r good on win 10 but the damn thing installs the manufacturer ones and in many cases creates trouble.
So different issues than win7 but the time spent ain’t that much of a difference.
Finally Ms realized it or made her by user input and cursing, and they preparing a new update which will provide maximum performance by killing all those Mambo jumbo.
So till that update for my personal experience it’s worst than win7, cause on win 7 I’m more experienced.
For that to come update I fear that it will not do much more than what I already do. It will, might just be easier. I hope the will give options on this or make profiles cause the kill em all ain’t always good u might need something and it will not give you the ability to use it cause u asked to kill em all.
But that’s hypothetical…Στάλθηκε από το MI 5 μου χρησιμοποιώντας Tapatalk

@Mortesil: Horses for courses I guess. I’ll stick with win7 until EOLs, I’ve simply heard and read too many horror stories here and in other forae about yet another forced win10 “update” breaking an elaborately set up BMS deskpit or one of its components. BMS can be a delicate beast, and the delicacy grows exponentially with the number of add-on devices one is using.
While I really do value your opinion and expertise in all matters BMS, I guess we’ll just have to agree to disagree when it comes to our differing views on win10’s privacy & update issues. Calling them “hogwash” may have a dramatic effect, but it won’t make them go away
All the best, Uwe

Sure Mortesil but on top of Google u have and the windows Hog.
Now while u have Google closed or firewalled or whatever, u must handle and the Ms hog. Ms hog is more of a trouble cause it runs whenever… This on top of security eats and resources, maybe minimal but it sure does. So for flight simming were u need in most cases all the juice it can provide then u must deal with those.
So the simple user must find out how to do it, and whenever an update comes to recheck if something deviated from what he did or if it’s a new commer.
About the same in win7 but as said ppl already having such issues or wanting to block such things found the way, now it’s a different story for them.Στάλθηκε από το MI 5 μου χρησιμοποιώντας Tapatalk
