Need help assigning VAC voice activation key to Cougar TQS
-
Hi guys,
I recently uploaded Darkman’s VAC profile and would like to map the default voice activation command key (F8 ) to my Cougar Hotas UHF switch and am having difficulty.
I found this post https://www.benchmarksims.org/forum/showth…2C+%27Armed%27
in which ddoc was trying to do the same thing.I mapped F8 to a random callback, then edited the key file to find the particular code that relates to the F8 key. I found this code to be 0x42, and then inserted it into the code associated with my TQS UHF radio switch as follows:
TQS UHF radio Callback with code - SimTransmitCom1 34 -1 -2 0 0x0 126
TQS UHF radio Callback with code adapted for F8 function - SimTransmitCom1 34 -1 0x42 0 0x0 126
However this does not work in game when I hit my UHF switch. If I press F8 in game and say one of the commands, I get the correct response from my wingman/tower etc so I know VAC is working in the background. I just can´t seem to get my DX HOTAS button to work.
Am I going about this the right way? Any help greatly appreciated.

I think you can tell VoiceAttack to also show / use joysticks, so really there should be no need for remapping your cougar to send" F8". I’m not at my gaming rig right now, but I remember being able to map the VAC key to “pinky - UHF switch” within the Voice Attack interface without any problems.
Also it’s probably not a good idea to remap your UHF button to something else once you start flying online.
Let me know if you need more help and I can look it up when I’m home.
Cheers, Uwe

It is correct, that VAC can’t (and will not) use DX buttons. But the Cougar is able of using both the DX callback and your VAC assigned keystroke (F8 in your case) at the same time. To do that, you can edit your Cougar via Foxy and assign both inputs at the preferred button. I’m not at my PC atm but will be glad to find a working setup you can use as reference if need be.
For now. Try to take a look at the Foxy manual if you find it a usable sollution.
An other way of doing it is to assign the VAC (key callback) to the shifted layer of the same button. Some people prefer to do it that way because it will enable you to separate your coms with tower, tanker etc from your flight coms if doing multiplayer. (In other words: You can ask AWACS for “picture” as much as you want without bothering your flight mates and blocking thier coms):)
Best regards
ZoomOut:)edit: BTW: As far as I can see from your post you’ve assigned two DX callbacks to the same key? If thats the case - and if I recall correctly - then the game will only read the first input. If the second input (F8) is assigned as a “button release” input it would work in most cases, but not when using it as the transmit button in VAC because it will have to be “held in” when transmitting (/H if using Foxy).
Anybody… please correct me if my memory is failing me on this one;)
-
I found the most convenient VAC PTT button to be the middle mouse button, which can then be assigned to any Cougar switch ( I use Foxy).

Hey guys, thanks heaps for your input. I have been really busy at work and have not had a chance to look at my setup all week I will try to make some time this weekend and get back to you with my progress. Thanks again.

I’ve marked the joystick bit in yellow, you can see that the start / stop listening function (I use it as a toggle function so it only listens when pressing the button combination and ends listening when releasing them) is assigned to two buttons on my cougar (pinky + UHF up I think)
Good luck & enjoy VAC, it really is an incredible tool that really adds to the immersion.

Hi Hoover
I think Wilkotaz is reffering to VAC (Voice Activated Coomands) and not VoiceAttack. But I might be wrongBest Regards
ZoomOut;) -
Awww, I’m sorry if this is indeed the case. I might have been fooled by the “VAC” icon on my desktop… never mind then, sorry for any confusion
-
Sorry Hoover, I was refering to VAC as ‘Voice Activated Commands’ software. Really appreciate your help anyway!
Zoomout, I´m still really confused as to how to go about doing this… I have tried searching online to download 'FOXY´but cannot find the program? I am often pointed towards Thrustmaster’s T.A.R.G.E.T software, however my Cougar Throttle is connected via Realsimulators TUSBA R2 adapter, which unfortunately is not supported by T.A.R.G.E.T software
You said ´’An other way of doing it is to assign the VAC (key callback) to the shifted layer of the same button’ - is this method using FOXY software also?
With regard to my key file, I did not assign two DX callbacks to the the same key (sorry I explained poorly…). What I meant to say was that my original UHF switch callback looked like this:
SimTransmitCom1 34 -1 -2 0 0x0 126
Here you can see that the UHF callback is assigned to DX button 35 (or Falcon BMS button 34).
I then determined that the F 8 key was represented by the code 0x42
So I then inserted 0x42 into the callback to look like this:
SimTransmitCom1 34 -1 0x42 0 0x0 126
Any thoughts on what I may have done wrong here?
-
Did you look here for FOXY?
-
Wilkotaz - did you ever get this resolved? I just recently purchased the TUSBA R1 and although I had it running fine in Foxy prior to the TUSBA, now I really don’t have any idea on how to program the Shifted Layer to the my UHF callback? Thanks

Bump! Has anybody had success with getting VAC (F8 as the activation) working on the Shifted DX (UHF/VHF) of a TUSBA connected Cougar TQS. I have racked my brain all weekend and continually have gotten wrapped around the Foxy/TUSBA/BMS UI/Key File dance. Looking for any suggestions on where to look to find the answer. I understand the basics of the Key File, but the command that is in a Third Party Software is kicking my butt right now. Thanks in advance. Joe

OK, I tried a different activation key for VAC, but still have the same problem. I assigned the Arm key (in VAC Builder) to “Home” which is in the Full.key file as “SimTransmitCom1” in the TQS portion, but I still can not get it to activate the VAC arm. If I press “Home” on the keyboard it works fine. Also the unshifted layer and shifted layer of my Cougar TQS both activate the UHF transmit in 3D, but only the Keyboard will bring up the Comm menus. Looking for additional assistance on transmitting F8 on the Shifted DX command on the TUSBA R1. Hopefully I am making sense and thanks in advance for any help.

Hi,
come on over to LMC:
https://www.benchmarksims.org/forum/showthread.php?19380-Livrot-Mic-Command-Preview-Release&p=279271&viewfull=1#post279271You can use it for free with temporary licenses or buy me a beer

Livrot,
Thank you for the reply and the offer. I had everything working great until the “upgrade” to TUSBA on my Cougar Throttle, which has tied me up with DX brain lock for the last two weekends. I have briefly reviewed your LMC and may take you up on your offer, if I spend one more full weekend trying to binding key commands instead of flying! LOLThanks again
Joe -
crossjoe,
save your weekend, install LMC, get one of the BMS profiles on the website, read the quick start guide, load the profile, go to the Hotkey page of the Settings Window / Hotkey page, click on the mic button and press the button for the mic on your throttle. You can even program your Throttle and Stick with LMC after reading the Hotkey Options section of the manual. (button combinations are possible for LL Hotkeys, …).
I can uplift your LMC account to ‘owner’ if you pm your username to me. Just promise to give feedback to uplift LMC in return. Thanks!

Looks like LMC fails to pick up any buttons on the stock Cougar on my system. Keys work fine, but the only DX buttons it registers are the ones on my logitech g25 shifter, other devices aren’t picked up apparently (2xTM mfds, hotas cougar, t500 racing wheel).
Cheers, Uwe

There’s always AutoHotkey. I use the simple script below to intercept DX20 & 21 keypresses (VHF & UHF on the radio switch) and activate HOME & END keys as PTT keys in OBS Studio. This way it only records from my microphone while I’m transmitting on VHF or UHF.
1joy20:: Send {END down} KeyWait 1Joy20 Send {END up} return 1joy21:: Send {HOME down} KeyWait 1Joy21 Send {HOME up} return
Assuming you can find out which DX buttons your TUSBA TQS is using you should be able to do something similar.
-
Thank you Darkman. I am unfamiliar with AutoHotKey but will give it a look. I have figured out the DX numbers so I hope it should be a simple swap of numbers. Thanks Again!

Hi again,
I bet you use target.
Uninstall Target.
You can program Throttle and stick, mfds and the rwheel with LMC, too.
Or edit your keyfile.Target steals DX buttons of thrustmaster devices away, other programs like LMC no longer receive them with target installed.
My TM mfds work well for hotkeys in LMC, cougar and throttle too …
Time to put this message in the quick start guide of LMC, I guess.
