Nose Wheel Steering
-
Is the NWS symbol lighting up when pressed the button once?
-
It is working now. I pressed some more buttons and is okay. Now time to figure out what i actually pressed. Thank you!

Sorry to dig out this thread but I have run into a problem. When pressing the NWS button on the HOTAS the green NWS AR light won’t turn on. When checking the systems the light is working but I cannot activate nose wheel steering.
I am on the ground, engine and systems are fully aligned and running. Usually I press the NWS/MSL Step button and everything is just fine. This time it is not. Common problem?Regards

Probably you already checked this but in the Setup/Controllers page, when you press the NWS/MSL Step button, then it does indicate that the key binding is recognised correctly?

Yes^^ I always check peripherals first to make sure that HOTAS or the controls file isn’t broken. Was not the case.
After restarting BMS everything worked as desired, though it has some russian roulette feel to it. One will never know when NWS won’t work the next ramp start -
if NWS fails you can still steer the jet on the ground at low speed using the brakes - its not pretty but it works !!!
-
Did you forget by any chance to switch NWS off on take off? It can be damaged and if you fly that mission again it will stay damaged until you exit the game. it happened to me
Marc…
-
I switch it off the moment I am on the runway. I couldn’t turn NWS on during an ordinary ramp start.
-
I thought you are supposed to switch it off/on above/below 70 Knots?..that’s my SOP.
-
That’s what I do. Most of the time I turn it off right before I hit afterburner for take off in order to avoid damage should I forget to turn it off above 70 knots

I have the same problem. I’m using a T-Flight HOTAS X and Blue Raven’s key file. After a ramp start, I can’t get NWS to engage. The #8 key on the throttle is supposed to turn NWS on, I also tried the keyboard command (shift /). No light in the indexer. I quit out and the 8 button works on the throttle in setup and the indexer light comes on when I did ground ops with out the ramp start. Did I miss something in the checklist?

Maybe there’s some key bounce going on here. If you use TARGET or FOXY, you can add some hold time to the command. Another way is to use the keyboard and see if the problem goes away when using the it instead of the stick.
-
I was also going to advise checking your axis setup.

Thanks for the responses!
I researched the forum posts for this problem and found the answer. While hunting around for the handle to close the canopy, I hit the alternate gear switch by accident. If you hit alt gear, the NWS does not work. I finally figured out how to operate the canopy by zooming in on the area on the left sidewall and looking at places where my mouse turned green.
In another post someone posted that you operate the canopy by clicking on the yellow spider on the left side of the cockpit. That is obviously not correct. The spider does not operate the canopy. I have no idea what the spider does (yet), but I know where it is.

I decided to take another bite.
Below is a explanation of canopy operation from the BMS F-16 - 1:
1.2.1.16 Throttle grip and left side wall
The left sidewall has two important hotspots. Hotspots are areas where the mouse turns into a selective zone where a switch can be clicked. The first one is the canopy area. Normally the canopy switch is hidden inside the left sidewall and protected with the yellow spider. The spider is just a switch guard. But in BMS it is the switch itself if you are using the mouse to operate it. Click on the spider hotspot to open or close the canopy. Alternately you can use the keystroke callback. The mission starts with the canopy open at Ramp start in BMS.I don’t think the above information is correct. I believe the canopy operates like the real jet. On the left side wall there is a small grey thingy just above the yellow spider. If you click on the grey thingy the canopy operates. The spider is a switch guard to prevent unintentional opening.

I had a similar sort of problem tonight. Ramp start, all good. Get ready to move out. Turn NWS on… yes, green light goes on. Remove chalks, we roll forward, I gently turn my stick to the left and…nothing.
The damn thing won’t steer despite NWS being ON? I’m sure I must have screwed up something during ramp start but any idea what I could have missed? I didn’t have this problem yesterday?
I managed to get to the runway using rudder input and once airborne, the stick functioned just fine so it wasn’t like it wasn’t registering the stick input?
(That was an interesting moment when I took my heavily loaded jet onto the runway, went into the AB and thinking to myself… if my stick just isn’t working, I’m soooooooooooo screwed! ) -

Yes rudder input, not stick
-
Yes rudder input, not stick
Not with roll-linked nws enabled [emoji6]
From the manual:
Enable Roll-linked NWS
This option helps you to steer your aircraft on the ground even if you don’t have rudder pedals as an
input device. The roll axis controls the steering of the aircraft on the groundVerstuurd vanaf mijn F5121 met Tapatalk
