Curiosity Poll - How much did you spent for HOTAS (stick and thruttle)
-
Why? What has it ever done to you?
-
ā¦it aināt natural.

I can 100% subscribe that. If you fly in RL, any kind of head tracking is completely strange. I am going for VRā¦.

But as motor vehicle drivers, we feel the same difference too surely? It still doesnāt bother me, and itās a hell of a lot better than a POV hat, or forking out Ā£600 for VR that is currently still very low resolution and demanding on hardware. It would also give me a very bad neck looking at #1 all the time or creaking around in BFM. TIR smoothens this for me.

Well, rather that than nothing. We donāt have 1:1 headtracking and what we can accomplish via VR isnāt idealā¦ Iām guessing you donāt pull more than 1.5Gs in your simpit because pulling 9Gs while youāre seated in your 1G pit isnāt natural? Iām guessing youāve disabled smart scaling too?

Iām not a fan of VR eitherā¦thatās why Iām building a cockpit. And yes - no Smart Scaling.
What Iām starting to notice (when I do desk fly) is that I spend far too much time over 6 G and spiking to 9 G when I need to be at 4. Part of this I chalk up to my stick, and Iām hoping Iāll be more in control once I get my actual pit built and have an FCC3 setup. I donāt desk fly much anymore - not once I got past a certain point in my pit build, and also started recalling the experiences Iāve had in domed trainers that I want to incorporate into my own build. I have a pretty clear idea of what I want to achieve.

Yup. I do happen to be a RL private pilot. And after flying in sims with a real cockpit, Iām not a fan of VR eitherā¦itās just another short-sell, IMO; no tactile feedback.
Best setup short of being in a real airplane is a full cockpit and a domed OTW projection - neatest one Iāve ever experienced used head tracking to project the OTW onto a 30 foot dome; the visual field filled your FOV to the point you couldnāt look outside of it, so you had full rez OTW wherever you turned your head. WAY cool, no idea how they did that. But itās where my 1 DOF idea spawns fromā¦compromise, but something I may be able to do.

Strange ideas there, Stevie. While I do agree that your ideas sound cool, Iām afraid that it is not currently possible given our techā¦ or at least not something that an ordinary hobbyist could get. Maybe someone with a good deal of disposable income and a spare barn, but not your average Joe with a gaming roomā¦ even then, how many āaverage Joesā have gaming rooms?
TrackIR is used in place of such 1:1 headtrackingā¦ not ideal, but cheaper than a barn + dome setup, and definitely more useful than using a hat. Learned behaviors in using TrackIR helps a lot with SA and dogfighting/padlock situations too.
Zoom (from your other thread) is used in place of 4K or 8K monitorsā¦ the eye can probably see finer detail than most monitors and so zooming in can help people see details you wold expect to see IRLā¦ or at least pretend your pilot has binoculars handy.
-
I agree with you, Ice. My way isnāt for everyoneā¦in fact, when I started my own project I wasnāt even āsureā I could do it myself. Iāve been at this from the standpoint of building a model airplane - a BIG model airplane - that integrates with a computer simulation, and have spent the past five years chasing my dream.
AFAIK Red Dog started all this pit building madnessā¦at least heās the first pit builder I ever came across, so he started it for me - Iāll give him credit. Iāve been in total shock not only of what folks over on VP are doing, but also at how many people are doing itā¦and how creative they are, each according to ability and budget. Some VERY creative people over there that have taught me a great dealā¦and thatās how I got to where I am. As a sidetrack, Iām currently building a CNC router to make parts for my cockpitā¦knew nothing about that when I started. Now Iām not only building one, but Iām designing it to meet my own requirements. Never too late to learn something!
As for 4K or 5K monitorsā¦Iām not a fan of those either - no binoculars in a fighter cockpit. And itās an added expense that doesnāt really replicate what an eye can see naturally looking through 1) glasses, 2) a visor, and 3) a canopy. All that crisp detail just plain isnāt there to see in the RW. So Iād rather save the money and simulate visual acuity by ādumbing downā the projection. What I donāt spend there Iāll put into something else - itās a matter of choices and priorities.

Another Colorado pilot! That makes 2 of us!

I have two TM hotas
The first one cost me around 120ā¬ the second one around 90ā¬ + 40/50ā¬ toll and fuel because it was trade off Personally.
The first one is for spare parts and the 2 one has new x/Y/Z stock pots + a home made CNC machined center play removal that cost me around 25ā¬
