Nordic gives black screen only
-
After a long absence, I’ve reinstalled BMS (incl. U4) and Nordic 2.1. Great to see this theater developing! I only can’t fly it yet.
Korea KTO runs fine, but I can’t get Nordic to show the pie-screen nor the 3D environment. Everything is ok in 2D (mission editor etc.) until I hit the ‘take off’ button. Then the screen turns black and that’s it. I have to kill it in the task manager of windows. Returning to Korea is OK. Btw, I can see the 3D models in the weapons screen.
Any ideas?

Hi Snail,
Revert to AMD drivers 17.7.1, its a known issue with newer ATI drivers and Windows 7.
There’s another thread about this driver issue also.Cheers Obi1
-
Ah, OK, thanks I’ll do that.
Edit: 17.7.1 is OK
-
i want to find out why this happens. if kto is fine , what is the difference with nordic? its a known issue with a fix, but maybe we can mimic in nordic the aspects that make kto work. anyone know more about this?
-
I did many test with changing AMD settings to no avail.
I think the pie-screen is a good test. Why is it working for KTO. Could you do a test with the pie-screen of KTO in Nordic? Or see what is different between the 2?
But then again could ofcourse also be just a difference when switching from 2D to 3D. Shaders loading?
Would surely be great if this issue can be tackled, by updated drivers or fixing differences between custom and stock KTO.Cheers Obi1

i have an amd 200 type card. to really check this, i need to make it not work first. i tried latest driver but no black screen. if i cant get it to stop working, im going to need a volunteer to send test fixes to. someone who can re-create this issue easily by changing drivers. i have a few ideas to test but cant see if they work.

Mine is an R9 280X. I can upgrade again and try your fixes

thanks for the help. i will make little update packs for you to try one at a time. im glad you got it working but this should be fixable. within a few days we will have some test fixes ready. cheers

Nice to offer your help mate!

Hello Snail
Thanks for the help again. I have a couple of fixes to try. Expect them Thursday to test. If these don’t work I need to keep trying because this is also an issue with nvidia, I think Nikos mentioned reverting it also. I don’t like that you have to degrade your card driver to make it work.
Not a good fix if it breaks other stuff you know?
Cheers

Well Falcon has its personality. It’s a Diva.
So having a boot HDD only for her saves u all that trouble from your daily normal PC usage. Having previous driver ain’t bad. Cause they release a new driver doesn’t mean things get better in general.Στάλθηκε από το MI 5 μου χρησιμοποιώντας Tapatalk

Ned,
We might consider asking the community users to report their successes with various combinations of operating system, graphics cards and drivers… that might provide a pattern. For me I only have one computer I am using and it has been rock solid the whole time.
I will say one thing and that is having put my OS and install on a SDD was one of the best things I have ever done . . . when I update stuff it is FAST! Opening and closing stuff is very fast. I have an older computer I built 6 or 7 years ago which didn’t use SDD’s and the difference between the two is like night and day. Not sure if that has had anything to do with my own stability but I have noticed that this is by far the most stable computer system to run Falcon I have ever had. . . I really owe it all to I-hawk who sent me the build - I just copied this list and couldn’t be more satisfied.

We know roll back of driver worked for Snail and Nikos. They both had AMDs of different types. But ^airwolf said his newest nvidia driver broke his NTO this way as well. We never got confirmation by him , so Any Nvidia guys out there have a latest driver issue?
If Snails’ test on these fixes work, it will be a non issue. Fingers crossed!

I have an NVIDA based Geforce GTX1070, not sure of the drivers right now. I also think folks should also consider switching to the MB graphics and that might be another to help predict graphics cards issues.

Ned, I have a Sapphire RX560 4GB, from AMD side on windows 7 x64 with SP1.
I have checked all the later versions of AMD Crimson drivers after the v17.7.1, except the 17.11.x (x: 1-4) family.
Just to let you know.

Some additional info: the problem with the new driver is that the 3D content isn’t displayed. The game runs in the background, behind the ‘black curtain’, I can hear the sounds.

Snail and I tried even replacing splash with kto splash, so that’s not it. Then I was trying to get terrain tiles canceled by renaming texture folder temporarily to “texture1” this gives me black terrain with no tiles. But it caused a “texture missing” error for Frits. I am digging thru art folder code , at a snail’s pace, and looking for discrepancies. I plan to get myself a new computer for Christmas , and will have latest amd card. This should supply me with the driver issue so I can test more easily. If I run across some obvious code differences before I get new Sys, Snail can test it for AMD r9 280x. I just haven’t found the lines yet and nothing is popping out as obvious problem yet.
One thing noticed was in detailed property info on splash pics show.
KTO has “AI” or “a1” in one field of the properties and Nordic did not.
But even without splash screen , black took over, now if it still blacks out when using no tiles has yet to be seen since “missing texture” error happens for Snail. If it’s not the properties if these dds and splash pics, then it’s a updated art file that isn’t updated in Nordic mod (I think)

Don’t forget it also seems Windows 7 related, same driver on Windows 10 has been said to work by someone here on the forum (if that conclusion was correct).
Starrats sometimes its easier to work the other way around, try building from the KTO and add Nordic stuff until it breaks;-)
A big big thank you for taking this issue serious, very appreciated, also to secure for our future with drivers to come.Cheers Obi1

So i tested the latest AMD 17.12.1 and the same problem still there.
But I did some testing to see if I could find something more. The theaters I tested that gave blackscreens:
-Ikaros
-Nordic
-Panama
-Balkans
-Balkans Loriks
-Iberia(POH)
-XPlaneTheaters that worked:
-Israel 1980
-Guam
-OMA
-Kuriles
-Korea
-Israel
-Ostsee
-Israel Carrier Ops
-Battle For BalkansI looked at what are the main differences between working and not working theaters and I strongly have the feeling it is due to the theater folder structure.
Actually what is a main difference for example is the \Campaign folder
The not working theaters all have subfolders in the \Campaign folder.
Probably the solution could be in the theater.tdf file where all paths are defined.
But I did not have time to do more testing but I will again when I have some more time.(I will keep the latest drivers for now)Oh, another thing I saw was that right after switching theaters the problem is already visible in 2D (previous theater screen still visible but button hoover location is actually of the new theater).
Also Ikaros is somehow different in that it shows black main screen even right after starting BMS.Cheers Obi1

thanks for this info Obi1, you may have started to solve this already! I am waiting on a new card to do some testing of my own as well. i know kurile very well , and if it is working, then my hunt for a bad or old art file may be a wild goose chase. this lead you have noticed may be a good place to start mimicing the working theaters. weird that this would be an influence on graphics driver though. snail blew my first theories out of the water and now your info shot down my other ideas. looks like we may be starting to close in on this.
