OpenTrack, does BMS work with it?
-
I have a TrackIR 4. The problem is the Trackclip Pros are ludicrously fragile with 1mm of thin plastic in the joints holding the prongs of the clip to the body. I have broken two Trackclip Pros. They aren’t easily fixable either to retain adjustability. So I don’t recommend a TrackIR.
I’ve found the Modified PS3Eye + Track Clip + Trackhat OpenTrack is a far more robust solution and works as good as TrackIR. TrackIR has a 120 fps rate vs 75 for the PS3eye but it doesn’t seem to make any difference in-sim. You can get them on Ebay cheap e.g. $49 (I’m not associated with this seller):
I tried modifying a PS3Eye but the film negative/floppy disk film trick didn’t work for me and I didn’t want to destroy the kid’s PS3Eye to pull it apart to remove the IR filter. So bought a modded one on Ebay like the above link.
PS3 eyecam tracks at 120FPS(120hz) exactly like TIR
-
Not with the PS3 eyecam they both track at 120hz
At 320x240 though I think?
I run 640x480 75hz

According to Wikipedia “up to 320×240@187 or 640×480@75 fps, can be selected by specific applications (Freetrack and Linuxtrack)”

Well okay, thanks so far, gents.
Here’s the thing: my current TIR4 that Ive had for 10 years died.
So I m seeking a replacement that’s as good or better and cheaper, and even cheaper is going to be tough, might have to ask the prone-to-violence-cop-wife for purchase authority and usually that’s a tough go.
Now, I did see this:
But it seems suspiciously cheap.

Hmm… is EdTracker cable solution? I thougt it requires keeping BT device on your head. While I don’t have tinfoil hat (yet :P), I would go for cables whenever possible.

Cheap?! $48?!
In Poland PS3 eye costs around $1-2 (tops!), IR diodes another $2-3
-
Cheap compared to these options I mean for a IR clip and ps3eye combo:

Whats ironic is these 2 companies say they are cheaper than TIR, but not by that much.

Mine is cable, there is also a wireless version.
Perhaps avoid using your mobile phone, too.
And I hope all your cables are shielded! Conductors like cables emit RF energy too you know.
Did you know the IR diodes you use emit RF as well?
Better get that tinfoil hat quick!

Yeah thats the same seller i bought my brother a kit from, works well and is as advertised.

Will do:P
Back on EdTracker - is it 6DOF or 3DOF headtracker?

Only 3 DOF. Pitch, roll and yaw. Why I went to Delanclip, full 6 DOF!

This is even better…

Sorry in advance if the question is stupid but why use Opentrack or anything else mentioned here instead of just getting a TrackIR? Is it just because of cost of TrackIR? Or do those other products actually have better performance or features compared to TrackIR?
Okay, so three questions, really.
-
Let’s be clear: the TrackIR5 hardware sensor is better than anything else out there, but its expensive (over priced).

That is a Delanclip
That aside, I’d recommend it. It work great and is cost effective. They also can provide a pre modifed ps3eye cam. At 75hz 640x480 seems fast and accurate response.

Strictly speaking, EDTracker itself is 3DOF. However, EDTracker is not what provides the TIR input to BMS - OpenTrack is. And OpenTrack, among other things, supports mixing and matching inputs. Its very possible, for example, to add a webcam and use the webcam to track position inputs, and the EDTracker for attitude inputs.
So while EDTracker is technically 3DOF only, its not terribly hard to use it in a 6DOF solution.
If you turn your head with say, a Delanclip or some other TIR knockoff, its possible to obscure the LEDs. If you have any IR contamination of the scene… say by it being daylight behind you - it simply doesnt work at all, due to the multiple IR sources.
None of that is a factor with EDTracker. It uses the same kind of sensors the JHMCS uses to track head movement, magnetometers and accelerometers. Hence the infinite FOV - there is simply no camera to concern yourself with at all.
