Switch from Cougar to Warthog
-
Greetings,
I apologize if this has been asked before. I’m having a hard time sifting through the search noise.
My Cougar may be giving up the ghost. So I ordered a Warthog HOTAS just in case.
My question is; has anybody switched from a Cougar to a Warthog? And if so what was your experience and what were your pain points for your transition?
I appreciate your feedback.
Thanks,
-Matt

Nothing but joy, here…I use a Warthog stick and a Cougar throttle. If your TQS is still holding up you can 1) convert it with a Bodner board; or 2) buy a TUSBA from RealSim. I’ve done both, and both have their easy points and tough points. For one, converting with a Bodner makes your TQS Mac/PC compatible (a WH stick works VERY nicely on a Mac as well). The TUSBA can be a bit fiddly to set up, but once you’ve got it you’ve got it.
I do my key assignments via BMS Setup.

Ah, thanks for that. My concern was giving up the TQS. That’s the real issue that I was grappling with. I don’t fly anything other than an F-16. (When flying BMS.)
Thanks for the input.

I also migrated from a cougar to the warthog a few years ago. The big letdown on the warthog is the lack of a proper thumbstick, but that can be alleviated by replacing the stock microstick by the one manufactured by delta sim electronics (I think).
The big upside of the warthog is much better throttle control so AAR will become a lot easier; also the plethora of extra switches on this HOTAS won’t hurt, either.
Word of advice: Stay away from TARGET if you can and do all of your assignments using DirectX. Kolbes Keyfile generator will provide a good generic layout that you can adjust to your likings later.
All the best,
Uwe

That’s another plus for modding your TQS with a Bodner or TUSBA - you upgrade it from 10 bit resolution to 12 bit resolution. The effect of the goodness is VERY noticeable.

Does a TUSBA actually do anything regarding increasing resolution? The signal from the TQS will still be the same.

Yes - the TUSBA essentially replaces the Cougar motherboard. The TQS PCB has no smarts on it, and the TUSBA provides 12 bit resolution which is an improvement over the Cougar’s 10 bits.

Thanks Stevie, makes perfect sense

There is also another option if one still wants to use the TQS: Leave it plugged into the base of the Cougar stick. Have done that in the past and worked just fine alongside the Warthog stick. I simply placed the Cougar base in a corner under my desk so it didn’t get in the way.
