Tricks of the trade of acquiring steady crosses with Mavericks
-
Been using B and D models against tank battalions (T-80 and T-90) in Tiger Spirit, fair weather, 15k-18k feet, from between the cumulus clouds obviously Based on 3-4 missions I get the impression as if:
-Designate target by 10nm or so away for the best chance of valid lock (steady cross).
-As you get closer, the likelihood of a valid lock decreases, by 6-7nm it’s a waste of time, a steady cross starts flashing eventually as well.
-Flying steady during handoff increases chances of a valid lock.
-T-80/90 are relatively difficult for the Maverick to acquire.
-HOC/COH rarely makes a difference(?)Procedures and release parameters as per manuals. Based on your experience, what do you think of these claims? Are there other practical considerations to know about maximising chances of a steady cross (aside from knowledge in manuals)?

About likelihood of a valid lock decreasing, I don’t think it works quite like that. Rather, it’s that if you don’t have a good lock at 10nm, then you’re probably not going to get it. If it doesn’t lock at 7nm, then getting much closer will get you into MANPADS range, anyway. I used Mavs a lot, never had a problem locking up tanks.

Thanks for your input. Could’ve sworn I’ve seen it happen, but could be wrong. This whole staying at home thing will soon make me see dead people…

My experience has been that smooth and steady stick movements with the nose pointed as direcly as possible at target is really the most important factor

Happy to fly with you and help you with that. If interested hit me up
Cheers
