Helios Falcon Plugin QOL Update
-
Welcome to the Helios Falcon Plugin - Quality Of Life Update Thread
Latest Update is: 3
Since there can be significant time between Helios releases I wanted to be able to get changes out to the Falcon BMS user base more often. There isn’t a specific frequency for updates its just when I feel that something new has been implemented within the Falcon plugin that I feel just can’t wait. I will make updates to this thread as often as needed. Obviously all updates to the Helios Falcon plugin presented here will be rolled into the next full release of Helios.
Update History
Update: 1
Build Date: 6/16/2021
Compatible With Helios Release Version: 1.6.3504+ (Should also work with early version of 1.6 but is untested)Added Feature: Force BMS key file
This build adds a feature to the Falcon Interface where a user can select to have the key file that is defined within the Helios profile be set in the Falcon BMS Pilot Callsign options file (*.pop file). How it works is when the Helios Control Center runs the Falcon BMS profile of choice the Falcon Interface will first determine if the pilotcallsign.pop has no backup and then will copy the pilotcallsign.pop file to a directory named Helios under the Falcon BMS/User/Config directory if a backup does not exist. Once that is done the Falcon Interface will update the pilotcallsign.pop file with the name of the key file to use.
NOTE: The backup of the pilotcallsign.pop file only happens once for the Pilot Callsign that is defined within the Windows Registry. Also for this to work correctly the Helios profile must be started first before Falcon BMS is started. Once Falcon BMS starts it’ll read the Pilots callsign file and use the key file defined within.
Install Instructions
Installation is very simple.
1. Locate the folder in which your Helios software is installed. The easiest way to find it is by right clicking on either the Helios Profile Editor Icon or the Control Center Icon and selecting ‘Open File Location’
2. Within the Helios install directory locate the Plugin folder.
3. Backup the current HeliosFalcon.dll file to something like HeliosFalcon.dll.original
4. Copy the HeliosFalcon.dll out of the zip file and place it into the Helios\Plugins directory
5. Run the Helios profile editor and open your BMS profile. Navigate to the Falcon Interface and select Force Key File Usage.
6. Save & close the profile editor
7. Run the Helios control center and start your BMS profile then start Falcon BMS. Falcon BMS should reflect the same key file that is defined in the Helios profile. This feature is not enabled by default.
Update: 2
Build Date: 6/18/2021
Compatible With Helios Release Version: 1.6.3504+ (Should also work with early version of 1.6 but is untested)Added Feature: All Previous Updates
Added Feature: Working Altimeter Gauge for Falcon BMSThis build fixes the Altimeter Control for the F-16. There was a long standing issue that the Helios F-16 Altimeter gauge would not reflect negative altitudes. You will now find a new gauge called ‘Falcon Altimeter’ within the Helios toolbox under Falcon Simulator. It works the same way as the other one. Just bind ‘indicated altitude’ and the ‘pressure calibration’ to the input of the gauge and that’s it. It should now work correctly.
NOTE: Since this is a NEW gauge and not a replacement for an older one you will have to add it to your profile yourself.

Update: 3
Build Date: 7/5/2021
Compatible With Helios Release Version: 1.6.3504+ (Should also work with early version of 1.6 but is untested)Added Feature: All Previous Updates
Added Feature: Additional Fixes for Falcon BMS Altimeter GaugeThis build fixes an issue with the Falcon BMS Altimeter gauge introduced in Update2, plus a minor adjustment of the tens drum rotating at 9900 instead of 9000 - code provided by Razor,Thanks!

Hi Wheelchock,
Could you also do something about the altimeter behavior in regard of “negative” altitudes? e.g. if you’re on the ground and reduce the QNH setting until the indicated altitude is below zero feet. In BMS the altitude reads e.g. 99900 feet, Helios shows 100 feet instead. It would be great if Helios would behave the same way as BMS does.

Thanks for the bug report. I fixed that once already so it must be a regression bug. I just tested with latest version and yes it indeed is not correct.
For future reference report any bugs here

Razor121, I updated the HeliosFalcon plugin and am testing it. The change now will allow a negative altitude value but, you can not use it with the provided Helios Altimeter gauge. I cannot change that as it is universal for both BMS and DCS. What you can do is create a customGauge for the altimeter ( I have one that I can give you ). You’l just have to copy it into your Helios profile and replace the current one. I’ll let you know once I have that all packaged up and available fr you.

I did report this issue but the problem was not really solved. Thanks for fixing it! I’ll build the solution and test it. And yes, I have a custom altimeter. The only custom gauge that I use is the speed meter. I still did not find a way to create a custom one.

Well we are actually fixing the Altimeter that is in Helios so that it works correctly with BMS. So stay tuned!!!

If you do so, could you also look into the drum numbers? In BMS they are turning the other way round than in the other famous flight sim that Helios does support. This applies to all drum numbers in the default instruments.

I’ll look into it but can’t promise anything

We found out that it’s BMS that is incorrect in it’s altimeter drum rotation direction. See this https://bmsbugs.blu3wolf.com/view.php?id=184bug for details

Wheelchock, could you also look into the drum for the 10th thousands?
I starts turning immediatelly after passing the 9000 feet but I think it should start turning at 9900 feet and end at 10000 feet.
This leads to situation where I look at the altimeter and see something like 19700 feet whereas 9700 feet would be correct. Thats because the 10th thoudsands drum already shows somewhat “1”. -
Yes I’ll take a look at it. It should start turning until 9900 like you said.
