Do I need Virtual Desktop?
-
I am finding it very difficult to find resources on how to get VR to work in falcon BMS. i have changed the config file, I have steam VR installed, I am running a link cable, and I have enabled the ‘Virtual reality’ option in the launcher. It seems to open steam VR home but it doesn’t do anything more; I have seen some things saying Virtual Desktop is required and was wondering if that was the issue. Thanks in advance for the help.

If you have a cable no…
Just avoid Airlink at all cost…

@MaxWaldorf . Yes, my experience with airlink has made ant to avoid it no matter my situation. I was wondering if you or anyone else can give me a short rundown on how to set-up quest 2 with BMS?

… Yes, my experience with airlink has made ant to avoid it no matter my situation.
I’m currently saving up to get a Quest 2 to replace my aging Oculus Rift (CV1), and have done a lot of reading on the Airlink mode because it really appeals to me - not for sitting at desk VR, but for a 30-60 minute session of something active like a shooting gallery game, etc. I’ll be upgrading my home internet around the same time to a newer Arris modem with WiFi 6.
The Oculus Quest 2 uses WiFi 6 (802.11ax) for wireless connectivity, so using a router or modem that supports WiFi 6 (802.11ax) would be capable of the best possible performance with the Quest 2’s VR Airlink feature. WiFi 6 is the latest version of WiFi, offering faster speeds, greater capacity, and improved performance in crowded environments compared to previous versions. This means that using a WiFi 6 router or modem would provide a more stable and higher-quality wireless connection between the Quest 2 and the computer. Additionally, having a high-performance router or modem with a strong wireless signal and minimal congestion on the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands will help to ensure the best possible connection.
Quest 2 supports both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands for wireless connectivity… the 2.4GHz band provides a longer range but is more prone to interference, while the 5GHz band provides a shorter range but is less prone to interference - users can select which band the device should use, depending on the environment and the available networks.

@SemlerPDX Ok, Airlink is probably not an option because of my local area and my router (WiFi-5). I have managed to get a strong and reliable connection to my pc, but have not been anle to set up falcon BMS for it. I cant find any ‘step-by-step’ rescources on how to do it do you or anyone else know?

Without investing in Wifi 6, I had a spare AP that I dedicated for the Quest2 and it worksperfectly…

@KillerDew976 you added BMS to steam library as a non-steam game right?
then you just plug in your link, power up the hmd, access the link thru the HMD interface, stay away from steam “home” - instead open the BMS launcher and make sure VR slider is ticked, at which point steam VR starts, and then you can click “launch” on the BMS launcher. you can then see the BMS menu in the HMD either thru Steam VR or thru your link to your desktop monitor - ideally you interact with it thru the steam VR interface, and then upon entering 3d you’ll see BMS in VR thru the steam VR interface.

I am also having problems with the Quest and VR, as detailed over here https://forum.falcon-bms.com/topic/24313/original-quest-support-in-vr
I did not have BMS added to Steam Library as a non-steam game, so I gave that a try.
I followed your instructions as far as “open the BMS launcher and make sure VR slider is ticked”
My issue is that I do not have a VR slider in the Launcher and I can’t figure out why.

@Pegasus82 did you re-install steamVR?
Seems to help in some cases…

It worked for me, thanks!
I followed this guide to uninstall Steam VR before reinstalling. https://techtyche.com/how-to-uninstall-steam-vr/

@MaxWaldorf What is the problem with Airlink? Airlink seems to work for me although I can’t see my mouse cursor or the HMCS and don’t know why. Is Virtual Desktop essential? What does it do?

@danster overall much better compression,
Less artefacts, much better bandwidth usage and less latency…Must you have it? No…
But you won’t regret your purchase either…
