Optimal Setup
-
I hope this is the right place for this question.
Since 4.37, the fans in my pc run almost continuously. My son, who built my computer several years ago, says that I probably need an upgrade. He’s given me a budget for the hardware and has agreed to do the work.
I don’t have my current specs (not at home) but maybe some folks could give me an idea of a decent “future proof” setup. I’d really appreciate it!
TIA!

@Nupe2 Any balanced computer is a “decent” computer.
However, recommendations can vary wildly based on preference, not to mention actual budget. A broad-strokes recommendation would be get the best CPU and GPU you can afford, at least 16GB dual channel RAM kit, at least an SSD for OS, another SSD for games, a HDD for storage. Don’t skimp on the PSU and case either. Anything you can “salvage” from your current PC would be one less item to buy meaning more cash in the budget for better components.
You mentioned fans in your current system — but what are your current specs and what temps do you get? Do you get framerate issues? For all you know, your PC can be decent and you’re just triggering an aggressive fan curve when you play 4.37

@Nupe2 having the fans running simply means your CPU cores are working and generating heat. Which is good, that is what they are made for.
If you really want to make it run cooler, disable parallel rendering. But that will cost you 30-40% FPS.

@Nupe2 V-sync is off by default. Did you maybe used to have it enabled, on 4.36?
On any mid-tier or higher system, it makes a huge difference – viz. pausing to wait for the monitor to flip frames, before turning the crank to draw and render the next frame.
(The trade-off is longer input-loop latency… eg. I find it noticeably harder to do AAR with v-sync on. )
Post your specs. We’ll happily opine on whether you need a $20 air cooler or a $200 liquid cooler or a $2000 new PC.
