VR Noob. Does Quest 2 require link cable?
-
You need steam and steamVR to be installed…
-
This could be related to your issue: https://forum.falcon-bms.com/topic/23910/launch-without-any-setup-override-and-vr-switch
-
@flavel Tested with air link works fine no latency issues, if bandwidth is not enough it will switch to lower resolution and keep low latency.

@chinpok Can you read the HMCS? I can’t… I use Airlink.
-
Use Virtual Desktop…
Much better compression…

This link says that Virtual Desktop is NOT for Oculus Quest (and I am assuming that includes Quest 2 because that isn’t listed in the supported devices either) https://store.steampowered.com/app/382110/Virtual_Desktop/

@MaxWaldorf It’s easy to see the confusion - search for Virtual Desktop on Steam and you get told:
"Virtual Desktop is an application developed for the Oculus Rift / Rift S, HTC Vive, Valve Index and WMR headsets that lets you use your computer in VR. This app is NOT for the Oculus Quest. You can browse the web, watch movies, Netflix or even play games on a giant virtual screen. "
You have to go to the Oculus store or Pico store to get the wireless version for Quest.

@danster Yes, I can see some “jpeg” compression but overall it’s ok, I have very good stable wifi 5. I’m just lazy to fire Virtual Desktop up and it messes with audio devices etc. but I used it for a long time and it should be better. First you could try fixing bandwidth in air link settings on quest 2 but then it will stutter when your wifi is not fast enough (instead of changing to bad quality). Stable 100mbps+ wifi connection is a must. If your wifi is ok and it still looks bad try Virtual Desktop.
-
@chinpok Thank you Chinook. Some more Noob to VR (Quest 2) questions, if you don’t mind:
-
I’ve tried Airlink (and purchased Virtual Desktop), but am getting stuttering,-even with a cable- in undemanding training missions. My wifi is admittedly only average.
-
I assume Steam VR runs in the background. Does that mean that VR in BMS (single player) always has to have a good internet connection?
-
If one uses Virtual Desktop does one still need Steam VR?
I have an i71300F and RTX 3070, not the best, but seems to be Ok for other VR users.
Any advice would be appreciated.

@danster Hi, I just got a quest 2 a few days ago so hopefully I can help! This is just general advice as I have yet to set up BMS for VR but,
-
For Airlink, according to meta and other sources you need a stable wi-fi connection in addition to a router that supports 5Ghz and ac/ax - Furthermore, if you are using a link cable either the meta one (although it is quite expensive and the third party ones do the job well enough) or a third party cable go onto the occulus desktop app and click ‘Test Connection’ for the cable. A good connection would be above 2.0 Gbps and will show with a green tick after completing the test.
-
When ‘waking up’ the headset the occulus app opens by default, from here with the link cable you should be able to bring up your desk top and then launch the steam game via your steam library rather than launching steam VR first. But yes, steamVR will run in the background but as long as you have ethernet to your PC your connection should be fine
-
Can’t give you advice on this as I don’t use virtual desktop currently.
And I can run H3VR, Pavlov & Beatsaber on a 7th Gen i5 and a 1070 so I think youll be alright!

@soupream Really appreciate your tips Supream!
It would seem to me that I probably lack the Wi-fi quality for Airlink, so I can simply use the Meta cable I have bought.
I must check to see how to add BMS to my Steam library ( I only use BMS). I’m struggling with the whole sequence of connecting (Oculus, Steam, Virtual Desktop- which seems to be popular although I’m not sure what it does for BMS) . VR is brand new to me, but I’ve glimpsed it’s amazing possibilities with BMS.
I would be interested to know how BMS works for you.

@danster Sorry I check the forums rarely.
Cable: If you have problems even with the cable it could be a performance issue or link issue.
-Try to lower the quest 2 resolution in the oculus app.
-Turn anti aliasing off in BMS.
-Oculus debug tool can limit the mbps for the cable, that can be an issue too.
-You need a proper usb3 slot and cable, I bought several until I finally got an actual USB3 spec despite the webshop said it’s usb3 (but if the oculus app is not complaining about it you are good).
-Could be CPU limitation too as it goes through an USB cable it’s more CPU intensive than a normal HDMI connection.
-Check SteamVR and set it to 100% and turn all the junk off so it is effective bypassed or try to use OpenComposite (I don’t if it works with BMS).Wifi: You needs a stable 100 mbps+ wifi connection. Then play with the settings in Virtual Desktop and quest link you can set the bandwidth. I have 90mpbs set in virtual desktop I think and my wifi goes up to 250 mbps.
I have a 5800X3D with a 3070.
