Solved BMS Crashing upon launch using both launchers

@Wicked that crash log is not helpful … need recent crash log from
\Falcon BMS 4.37\User\Logs
but … probably safe bet to delete your d3d11.dsp file, and revisit Setup / Graphics screen settings

Will do, thank you.

@airtex2019 Unfortunately, I have been unsuccessful at getting into where I can adjust the graphics. I deleted the d3d11.dsp file, uninstalled the sim and then reinstalled. Still crashing to desktop every time. I bought a new board, cpu and memory yesterday for other reasons and once I get them swapped out I’ll try to launch again and see what happens.
-
@Wicked seems you’re running 4.37.0? Try upgrading to .2 first
-
@Tumbler31 OK, I just reinstalled and updated to 4.37.2 and still cannot enter 3d. It crashes when I launch. I also did a search for d3d11.dsp and the file does not exist. I’m assuming this is because I haven’t made it into the sim to setup graphics yet? I’ve also updated all my drivers so no issues there.
-
@Wicked run with verbose logging
-mono
, enable full dumps and post the last lines of .xlog and your .dmp -
@Wicked can you clarify? when we say “entering 3d” we typically mean, leaving the 2D menu screen (clicking “take off” button) and then entering the 3D world
but you are on VR so it’s a bit ambiguous
1- put aside VR for a moment and try to launch BMS normally (I’ll say “pancake style” instead of 2D … are you able to access the menu screen and Setup / Graphics page?
2- logs? from ‘\Falcon BMS 4.37\User\Logs’
-
@airtex2019 I typically mean the same as you when I say 3D, meaning clicking fly. However, what I am actually referring to is launching the sim so sorry about that.
The sim crashes every time I launch. VR on or VR off, standard launcher/alternate launcher doesn’t matter, it crashes regardless. I cannot get to the menu screen where I can change graphics, sound, controllers and realism.
Here is the most recent crash text.

@Wicked this stack trace is usually the “no audio path” problem
https://forum.falcon-bms.com/post/369441
Hopefully U3 will bring a friendly error messagebox for this…
-
@airtex2019 This is what it says in xlog.txt at the end.
00:00:00.000] 26272 Error in sound setup, cannot create DSound. Errorcode: -2005401480
So that’s obviously it. That said, I can hear through my headphones for every other app. Not sure what exactly I need to do to fix it.

I added one. Well not a messagebox but a monoprint. Check the .xlog

Slight wraparound error, but this is error code 0x88780078

@Tumbler31 I’ve tried everything I can think of. I’ve changed sound devices from my USB headphones, to on-board sound, to USB 2.0 sound using the Reverb headphones. Crashes every time with the same error.
-
@Wicked search for the error code and then find and try this?

I don’t understand why this happens to some folks … but a couple times folks have reported intractable problems with BMS audio – especially USB audio devices, it seems.
I haven’t used this, but I’ve seen https://vb-audio.com/Voicemeeter recommended as a cure-all… it installs itself as a “virtual” audio device, which you can set as default for Windows. Then use its interface to route audio to whichever actual device you want.
(In theory, Windows itself should already be doing that. I know almost nothing about game-engine audio programming models, and DirectSound… just seems like most games and apps from last 10 years don’t have this problem, and obvs Windows is acting like a mixer, to combine audio from other processes while BMS is in flight … so I’m curious what the gap is.)
Maybe worth trying, before installing vb-meeter, using the Windows settings UI to bind BMS to use a specific audio device? Could it be that simple?
-
@Tumbler31 So I just followed the directions and found a realtec driver needed to be updated along with several others. I did a Windows update which updated several items with the correct drivers. As soon as all was done, I rebooted then booted up Falcon and hit launch… SPLAT lol.
What sucks is everything was working beautifully about 4-5 days ago and then the crashes began out of the blue. Also, I’ve now uninstalled and reinstalled the sim at least four times, on two different mobo and cpu combos with the same issues.
I just wanna fly… is that too much to ask? I’ll even dance for it!
-
@airtex2019 I just tried to associate Falcon with the headset I want to use. I opened the launcher and went to the volume mixer which is where you would make this change. Falcon doesn’t show up as an app. Even though it is open on my desktop. Windows Sounds, Mozilla, steamtours and Windows Mixed Reality show as apps that I can change but Falcon isn’t there.
-
@Wicked oh yeah, dang, it’s a catch-22 isn’t it … apps don’t show up there unless they’re playing sound … and if BMS crashes on startup bc it can’t play sound … duh
sorry
there’s probably a registry key or smth, that that UI updates, but I don’t know where to look.
if I were you I suppose I’d try vb-meeter
-
@airtex2019 Playing with VB Meeter now but it’s not working either. This sucks lol, oh well.
-
@Wicked sorry about the deadend … I’m basically out of ideas. Is this Win10 or 11?
I do recall some other thread where someone had to physically unplug their VR headset, to get BMS to startup successfully.
I don’t remember if we ever got to the bottom of that, or what else they did to recover VR functionality… I’ll see if I can find it.
