Solved Newbee on BMS, questioning myself if i failed or it is a intentional feature?
-
After decades of absence (really) i was excited to find out, FALCON 4.0 is back, so i installed the latest Falcon BMS. Let me first thank you for this great gift.
I know there are many new functions for me to learn about, but there are things i could not find out yet, so begin to ask myself if it is intentional or a bug.
When i enter “instant action” i should be at least able to fire the machine gun, isn´t it?
All i tried was not successful, i must have overseen something. But what?
Maybe it is an abbreviation i could not transscript correctly, cause i dont know the word in english?
best regards

@MarcAurel make sure to bind Second Trigger Detent. And you will need to be in Dogfight Override or Ground Strafe. And welcome to BMS!!

@MarcAurel Welcome back! This is not the Falcon 4 you remember. I’m not going to be the guy who says RTFM but you really do need to. If you start with the training missions it will be easier to find the information about the gun and other weapons and how to use them. In the doc’s folder there is a manual for the training missions. There is a training mission MISSION 19: GUN & HMCS/AIM-9X that has the information about using the gun. Start there if your looking to get the gun working. I went through the same thing when I started back with Falcon. I hadn’t flown since the early 2000’s and then I found BMS and did the same as you, jumped into instant action for some fun and couldn’t shoot anything. My advice is to get some quick knowledge on chucking spears and the gun so you can have some fun blowing stuff up. But really you should start with the training mission 1 and go through the list of missions to get familiar with the systems and how they work.
Welcome back to the best flight sim out there! -
@Quasi_Stellar oh-there are a lot of basics i am looking forward to learn, i think.
I even did not know that the setting exists, my joystic has no second trigger there. (wingman extreme 3d pro) I cannot remember i had read about before.
Thanks for your support and your patience. -
@Carbide Hello and thank you for the warm welcome. Like most times, the bug is sitting right in front of the screen. I just installed everything and was about testing the boundaries of my new PC with the “instant action”, cause i thought that will be less different to 1999´s Falcon i was a little familiar to and was not sure if it is some strange behavour or my own stupidity.
Really impressive to see the huge improvement the program has. And it was even fun to be shot down from sky fully defenseless. -
@MarcAurel If you installed without a hitch you are already ahead of some LOL. If your Falcon knowledge is from the 1999 days you will have nearly as steep a learning curve as a complete newbie as you have seen from not finding the A/A gun. Reading all the manuals is an absolute must and will quickly show you how much the sim has changed. I would also recommend training with a squad which in my opinion is the fastest way to get up to speed.

To reiterate what @Icarus stated, feel free to join a Virtual unit. You will learn more from a human than from your own trial & error. I rejoined the community in 2015 and was amazed at the learning curve from the Falcon “OG”/AF days. And it’s been a steady climb ever since.

I third the motion. I joined in 2016 with 4.33 after many years away. I was a FreeFalcon user Having to learn the Real as it Gets terms and acronyms was a steep curve. Long gone were the days of Lock Target button… Now I had to figure out my TMS from my DMS from the PFL. Hang in there and use the resources available, either through the Friendly Manuals, this Forum, or various Discord servers. And remember, learning is fun!!

@MarcAurel said in Newbee on BMS, questioning myself if i failed or it is a intentional feature?:

That does not matter
My X-56 doesn’t have a ‘first’ and a ‘second’ trigger function, either.
But the real viper has - that’s why you fire the gun with the “second trigger detent” function. And yeah, welcome to BMS!
I have flown the Falcon since version 1.04… and after having experienced what the BMS guys got out of this sim, I never want to go back to those old times again -

Trigger1 is the laser*, Trigger2 is the gun. But in practice, there’s almost no situation where that’s ambiguous… so you can just map Trigger2 and BMS will activate either laser or gun, depending on which master-mode you’re in.
(*Trigger1 also initiates ACMI recording … but you can map a separate keyboard key for that … I think it’s ‘F’ by default)
Fwiw here’s a layout template I made for this stick:

@airtex2019 First I need to apologize for not replying.
There are some things i dont understand with the xml-file you provided.
First it is not clear to me how to install it. i just put the file twice in that folder, but it is not been recognized. As per the text it is for an “Alt launcher”, but i dont understand how i load that xml…

@MarcAurel never went away, so how can it be back?
welcome by the way.J

@arabianjules
I meant like - it went away out of my personal focus. It turned back like Phoenix for me. -
@MarcAurel First, welcome back to the Family. One very big change from the 'Old Days" is that with 4.37 what used to be the "Alternate Launcher " is now standard, and has been refined. It makes setting up a HOTAS a lot easier.
One very useful option in DX Pinky Shift. When you assign it to a button on your x-56 ( stick pinky, for example) then a quick press will change FOV and if held enters a shift state.
As an example, lets use your trigger question. You can assign Second Trigger to your trigger. Then, holding your assigned DX Pinky down, you can also map First Trigger there. So, trigger pull with no DxPinky=Second trigger=gun. OTOH , pull trigger + DX Pinky held= First trigger.
Another cool trick to the Launcher is the release option. For example, let’s say you want to map your landing gear to a switch on your throttle base. You can map gear up to when you turn the switch “on”. Then map gear down to the release button , for when switch is “off”, or vice versa as you prefer
