Virtual Desktop and Quest 3
-
I have had Virtual Desktop for ages, installed on my PC, purchased through Steam.
Do I need to buy it again on the store in the Quest 3? Or can I activate the Quest 3 version somehow? -
@Atlas unfortunately, the quest three requires the one in the quest store
-
@Wheelchock
I was afraid of that. Thanks for confirming! -
So now I have Virtual Desktop both through Steam and through the Meta store.
Is there a performance difference between the two?
Annoying that the Meta version needs a program to be running on the PC for it to work, whereas the one on the Desktop does not.Please share your (Meta) Virtual Desktop settings!

All you need is the virtual desktop streamer app running on the pc. It should run at boot. Then on your headset open the VD app. That should be it.
On my headset, I never quit VD, so whenever I pick it up it just reconnects.

@rubbra
Yes but I’ve not had to do this with the Virtual Desktop Steam app, so I get caught out all the time. -

The only reason you would want to use the VD Streamer App is to use it as the OpenXR runtime. Your choice is also to use SteamVR as the OpenXR runtime but the VD Streamer App as OpenXR runtime has a better frame rate and performance than the SteamVR as OpenXR runtime.

Can you gents please share your settings for Virtual Desktop (Quest version)?I seem to be having issues:
- When moving my head quickly side-to-side, it seems like the picture cannot be drawn quickly enough so for about half a centimeter or so, it is essentially passthrough and I can see my room.
- While the experience is smooth with just the cockpit, when trying out other passthrough apps or handtracking apps, performance goes down. It’s been a few weeks since I’ve tried these though.
- My most recent issue is OpenKneeboards. When the kneeboards are visible, there is a significant increase in lag to the point that it can make me sick. Turning off/hiding the kneeboard removes this lag.
Interesting enough, when I use Virtual Desktop (PC version), I have none of these passthrough issues or lag.

I have the same issues. (Pico 4 for me) These issues are BMS only though - I fly Condor (SteamVR), MSFS (OpenXR) and DCS (OpenXR) as well as BMS, and BMS is the only place this happens.
I had the same thing with moving my head quickly with the Rift S (PCVR/displayport) too, but OpenKneeboards was 100% fine. Now, it is not. I’ve tested this with both VD and Pico Connect, and it’s consistently awful with both.
Not sure what you mean by Virtual Desktop (PC Version)?
I’ve just tested BMS with Pico Connect instead of VD, and the “moving head side-to-side” thing is still there, just slightly less pronounced. It’s widely reported by folks on the Falcon Lounge Discord VR channel.
Basically what I’m saying is - your issues are not, IMHO, Virtual Desktop issues; I see them when VD is not involved at all.

Virtual Desktop purchased through Steam as opposed to Virtual Desktop purchased through Meta Quest store
-
@Atlas ok, how does that work? I’ve only ever done VD Streamer app on PC, VD app in headset, connect, fly.
-
@rubbra
Connect via Steam Link which brings me to the Steam “house” and start VD there.
When I was using the G2, I would start VD in the PC and then put the headset on, which was the same procedure when I was using the Vive.The only downside to Virtual Desktop (PC) is that there is no passthrough option, at least that I know of. I have to use the Meta version to have this.

@Atlas
I believe the Steam version of VD was not made to operate with Quest 3. This is per the description of VD in the Steam version:Virtual Desktop is an application developed for the Oculus Rift / Rift S, HTC Vive, Valve Index and WMR headsets that lets you use your computer in VR. This app is NOT for the Oculus Quest or Pico headsets. You can browse the web, watch movies, Netflix or even play games on a giant virtual screen.
Also check the VD homepage for “Classic” vs “Wireless” versions.

Regardless, it works with the Quest 3 and is even better than the Meta version when it comes to BMS + OpenKneeboard.
