@drtbkj
Check your mav window is zoomed in? -
What altitude? What is your attitude… happy, sad, complacent?? JK… Nose down a bit?
-
Dive angle not just right or not waiting for handoff does it for me.
-
You want to abide by the 30/30/30 rule:
Not more than 30 degrees off axis
Not more than 30 degrees of bank
Not more than 30 degrees of bank change after track -
@Amadeus75 yes
@Quasi_Stellar Always happy(well mostly ) . I do wonder if flight attitude is a factor. I’m trying to stay around 15-20 K AGL to avoid ground fire, but that does lead to some sharp descents to center the cross.
@Icarus You and Quasi brought it up, so what is a good dive angle? Plus, I do wonder about the handoff issue, but even when I make the Mav’s WPN page SOI getting the sold cross seems an issue
@Frederf Is 2 out of 3 ok? You have me wondering about the 30 deg after track.
Back into 3D… -
Yep, that was better. I think I was rushing attacks and sloppy on procedure. More good practice is needed. From 12-15K AGL I had better luck with the cross down to about 4 miles range
-
@drtbkj Depends on altitude. I find a shallow ~3 degrees at 15000, more for higher, ~one degree at 5000 roughly speaking, adjust as necessary starting at 15-20 miles. Level flight I have found very finicky especially at altitude.

Good Day, All.
I would appreciate any pointers regarding getting a solid cross on Maverick D’s. I put the cross in the center of the keyhole and the middle of the WEZ, but getting that sold cross seems very hit or miss. I generally boresight them.
I was testing shooting in BORE and even then I was getting flashing crosses. Clearly, my procedure is off somewhere.In my wing I am only authorized to fly Block 15B, so I only have dumb bombs and AGM-65 in all its variants.
I know what you’re saying because it happens to me every day using that type of weaponry and it happens more with the AGM-65 D, with the infrared ones, with the A and B which are the TV ones, it doesn’t happen. I discovered that when you are in range and you have already locked the target with the AGM-65D and it flashes the crosshair and does not fix it, do a complete roll and when you are almost level at the end of the roll, the crosshair will be fixed ready to shoot. I don’t know what it has to do with this, but it works, try it.
GREETINGS.

@VIPER-0 I’ll have to try that, thx.
I haven’t had time to test today, but yesterday’s testing implied my issues were a bit of rushed attacks and a bit of bad habits learned, with one possible exception.
Even when I seem to be doing it right, when I get down to about 4 miles from tgt. I can’t get a solid cross. I’m trying to do this from 12-15K AGL, so angles could be a factor . I’m doing more testing this evening, and will try from a lower altitude. Which begs the question, what *is *the optimum profile for Mav-D’s, in terms of altitude? I generally try to shoot from the midpoint of the WEZ. But, from there to 4 miles is a small window -
@drtbkj I believe in real life it is generally lower level weapon ~5000 ft but can be fired at high altitudes correct me if Im wrong. The higher you are the farther out you need to fire. Firing 4 miles from target you need to be low. Your dive angle would be too steep at 12-15000

I was unable to find documentation of that, but attacking from 5K does seem to help

@drtbkj after reading Vipers in the Storm many years ago, Rosie described a couple different employment of Mavs. My takeaway was 20-12k, 375 or so knots and 5-10 degrees nose down. In ODS they were shooting at 5 or so miles. I guess I’ve just used that strategy since 4.33 and have had great success. Of course with SA15 or the like you may want to be considerably lower and shooting from max range.

Make sense, Quasi, and thx. That has been working for me, the key part being “5 miles or so”. Last night in testing I shot from 5k AGL and I was able to get solid crosses below the 4 mile limit I had seen from altitude. Of course , that is testing. You wouldn’t want to be that low that close tactically …yikes
