Throttle Fix for Control
-
I seem to have a problem controlling my throttle to where I can get a precise speed for AR. It seem to want to creep up when I think I have it set right. I have heard that there are some people that are using teflon tape around the barrel to control the resistance. Where can I get some of this tape. I took the bumps off to get rid of the clicks and trying aluminium tape right now.

imo, you are better off with the clicks, just they need to be spread out much more. mine are almost at the end of each travel, so that as soon as I move it up from the bottom of its travel, it clicks (IDLE), and as soon as I move it down from FULL AB, it clicks (MIL).
you could wipe the grease off and use duct tape. I have never seen teflon tape for sale (also never went looking for it).

Teflon tape is also called plumber tape: White very thin, good caracteristics. It’s use to wrap a pipe before screwing it to a faucet, for example. It avoid water leaks
I use it in my cougar too.

Ah I know the stuff now. my dad has some of that in his workshop.

I believe you are talking about stiction here. Stiction is the force required to get the throttle moving. Friction is the force required to keep it moving. In a stock Cougar the stiction >> friction. IIRC I put some insulating tape on it, and it’s pretty good. There is a tape specifically designed for removing stiction, but I can’t remember the name.

Actually, the best stuff is UHMW tape or PTFE (Teflon) Skived Film Acrylic PSA Tape. Plumbers stuff will move around with no sticky back. Sticky on one side is needed. Cubpilot used PTFE (Teflon) Skived Film Acrylic PSA Tape which costs about $200/roll. Look around there are some cheap prices. I got a roll for $15.99 on eBay I think.
For UHMW tape http://www.amazon.com/UHMW-SLICK-TAPE-PEACHTREE-WOODWORKING/dp/B00153EJ5S.
It makes a very big difference, I highly recommend it.
PS. degrease the roller before applying, then re-grease.
Edit: PTFE (Teflon) Skived Film Acrylic PSA Tape Here it is for $26 http://www.ebay.ca/itm/Fluorglas-PTFE-Silicone-Adhesive-Teflon-Tape-2-W-x-54-6-mil-mult-functional-/261142050691?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3ccd477783

UHMW was what I meant in my post. Thanks.

Thanks guys for the input. I will check out the tape you’ve recommended.:)
-
sticktion is indeed more than friction… if I nudge my cougar’s throttle whilst forward of the halfway mark, it falls into AB…
-
Are you saying that the Cougar’s TQS adjustable brake (plastic brake shoe) is worn out and is no long providing enough friction to give the resistance you desire for fine control?
Adding to the barrel is one strategy, another is is to lift the shoe higher off its fulcrum arm. Thats what I did and its resistance as good as new and goes from no to tight friction with the adjuster wheel. The Cougar’s detents positions across throttle travel are adjustable. I had purchased a Cougar recently to use it with a FCC3, and they are totally in the wrong place, so I made them match my original set.
fyi, remembering back to my college physics courses, we didn’t use “stiction” and “friction”. Rather its two kinds of friction: static and kinetic, respectively.

Some pictures would explain much more

lots of pics here :

Thanks for the input. Iadded tape to the barrel.
-
Also u can do this:
-
Thanks Arty. I didn’t know this one!
-
Arty, I did that and the tape and cranked up the tension. Its Throttle heaven with both. Smoooooth precision motion and stays put.

Argh, no matter what I do I can’t get it right. I take it regular sellotape is the wrong stuff to use? What grease/lube are you guys using?
Should I try this tape?
-
yeap it’s wrong…
the plastic surface must be slick.
cut a tape and to connect the edges and fit it there so not to go away u could use sellotape.
The tape can be cut from an A4 plastic page. But what I display in the pic above should be just enough.

Sorry mate I don’t follow. Sellotape isn’t suitable, or it is?
Or should I just order some of that slick tape from my link?
