Old Timer back again, FF5.5 v BMS
-
I just recently figured out how to get FF6 to work on my Win7/Nvidia computer. I’ve been playing the ITO2 theater a lot and after some time with it again after so many years, I can say the following:
Looking at FF objectively, and not as a fanboy (which I am) I think that what BMS does much, much better than FF is stability. I find it almost impossible to CTD stock BMS but FF can just CTD with no apparent reason. Also, objectively, BMS does the F-16 much better than FF. With the glaring exception of IFF, which we have beat to death here (and I don’t agree with BMS’s reasoning behind not including IFF despite what has been said, so there) the F-16 is just better done in BMS.
Spending some time with the other cockpits/planes available in FF vs. BMS, I find that there is a lot of…little things…that I overlooked playing FF that kind of annoy me now. Things like the HUD not lining up precisely with the little glass thingy on which the HUD is projected. Or gauges that don’t work.
FF may do a few things better. I know that FF spent a LOT of time cleaning up the DB. I don’t know how much work BMS has done on the DB. To that extent, you may see things make more sense in FF…this is hard to quantify and I might be seeing what I want to see, especially because this stuff is under the hood…but I feel like the AI is a bit easier to wrangle around and the behavior of AI is a bit more predictable.
In general, I would say this: There is value in installing both and trying them side by side. BMS is a much more polished product. Especially if your focus is on the F-16, you should probably stick with BMS. If you have any interest in multiplayer then it goes without saying that BMS is the place to be.
how did you get it to work I have a WIN 7 NVidia 64 bit laptop and have tried 4ever to get it to work!

Mav jp’s fm wins it for me, everything else is a bonus, and great!…I love these guys (BMS) because they take the time to do it right, and the result is gobsmacking.

I followed these steps EXACTLY except I’m using the same drivers I had installed…whatever the current drivers are. If this doesn’t work I have no further advice I can give you because I didn’t come up with these instructions:
1. Use 260.xxx driver
2. Use the Nvidia Control Panel - Manage 3D Settings to create a profile for FFViper.exe and then save & quit.
3. Start Nvidia Inspector v1.92 in advance mode (press little screwdriver and wrench symbol beside Driver Version)
4. Select the ffviper.exe profile from the drop down menu in the top left corner.
5. Select Scan Profiles for Unknown Settings and Values (little magnifying glass over gears symbol near top right)
6. Scroll down the sub-headings to Unknown - Find PRE_D3D9_COMPATIBILITY_BITS and go to the right of it and click - then select (King’s Bounty, X2: Wolverine’s Revenge, Independence War 2 - Edge of Chaos, Falcon 4.0 Allied Force, MS Flight Simulator X, Links 2003, Gothic 2, Gothic 1)
7. Apply the Profile with Nvidia Inspector.http://simhq.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/topics/3207959/Free_Falcon_5.54_is_out#Post3207959

Gobsmacking?
gob1
gäb/
informal
noun
plural noun: gobsa lump or clot of a slimy or viscous substance.
…and smacking?
smack1
smak/
verb
gerund or present participle: smackingstrike (someone or something), typically with the palm of the hand and as a punishment.
Soo, you are punishing the devs by “smacking” then with goo?

gob as in “mouth” and smacking as in “getting punched”
generally getting punched in the jaw isn’t pleasant but i think in this context it’s a compliment

Thanks for the info all. Cool to see some of the names from the past, Molni, Toonces…All downloads complete. Will install on my rebuilt XP machine in the next few days, can’t wait to fly again…
