F16 idle, not slowing
-
I’ve been flying a couple of missions and when I’m trying to land I am not able to reduce airspeed (even with speed brakes full open). I’ve calibrated throttle in my joystick and the idle position is ok. I notice that even at idle, fuel consumption is between 13,000 to 14,000. The only way I’ve been able to land is with the engine off. Any ideas of what I am doing wrong or what is going on?

If you have 13000-14000 fuel consumption, you are not at idle. Idle is around 800-1000. With this consumption you must be in MIL power, if not light afterburner.
I’m inclined to think your throttle axis is the issue. Go into setup -> controllers, at Idle position, the “Throttle” bar should be all the way down. Green bar (indicating Afterburner) should be at 70%-80% up, depending on your personnal preferences.
Wild guess : you put the green bar way down thinking its the Idle bar, so you’re in Afterburner all the time
By default, the red bar (indicating IDLE) is not useful. You are at IDLE when the throttle axis is at minimum value
Its useful only if your throttle has a cutoff position. You have to check a config option in the Configuration utility accessible in the launcher screen for it to work. -
I checked the settings, when the throttle axis is at minimum value, the bar is at 0 (or the same level as the red line). When I fly the mission, while bombing and throttle axis at minimum, fuel consumption is at 6,000-7,000. Then I use the autopilot to return to base, when turning off the autopilot to do the approach, the consumption is at 13,000, speed over 500 kts. I try to move the throttle up and down to do like a “reset” after turning off autopilot but it doesn’t go to idle.

6000-7000 is still way too much for IDLE. As I said, should be 800-1000
A few questions :
Where is your green line ?
What is your throttle controller ?
What happens on the runway, at take off, when you are idle ? -
In a steep dive?

I think I’ve got it! I was looking at the green line that you were telling me about and I was not seeing it. The green line was almost at the same level as the red one, that would explain the speed and fuel consumption. Tried it already and was able to get the normal fuel consumption (800-1000) at idle.
Thanks very much for the help!!

You’re welcome

Yes, the green line in your throttle setup is where the afterburner kicks in as you advance your throttle.

And the red one ast hte bottom should be just off the bottom of the scale.
This sounds more like the controller hasnt been configured in Control Panel in windows than anything. Go to Start, Devices and Printers, your game controller should be in there. Use the right click properties interface and move press and trun all your controls to there fullst extent at least 5 or 5 times so the minimum and maximum as well as button pressing and knob turning are all recorded. Then click on apply and do a reboot, now when you get in the game youll rpobably have to redo the setup on your controller and your idle RED line should now be at the bottom of the scale. If not then reinstall the drivers after uninstalling them and rebooting prior to reinstallation, go through the previously described method and try it again.
Its not unknown for this to happen if a variable resistor or optical sendor gets clogged up and may involve a strip and vacuum job to get dust, skin and other scuff out of the base of the stick. I had a Sidwinder 2 once that did exactly the same thing and that turned out to be a busted throttle pot, so I ended up with a Saitek X52 when they first came out and its still working perfectly to this day 11 Jan 2015.

Gyro, problem has been solved, and it was only a matter of putting the AB detent where it should be…… no need for rebuilding your computer by hand in a full moon while making a sacrifice to the Falcon god.
