Has anyone thought of using MIDI controller?
-
So I’ll say up front I have zero clue if this is even possible… but I dabble in music stuff and one of the cool developments of recent years are the numerous Midi controllers that have come out both as dedicated hardware but also as customizable interfaces on iPad/android devices. It seems like something like a drum pad controller or the like would be an interesting asset if it could be made to be able to “talk” to BMS - so many buttons / knobs / sliders often all assignable to send midi messages of various sorts, if someone could figure out a way to receive these midi messages and translate them into keystrokes to be mapped to the sim, the ideas get fascinating to think of the various kinds of control panels that could be built at that point.
So I ask… has anyone significantly smarter / computer savvy ever even thought to explore this? -
Being an Engineer that also dabbles with guitar in a personal studio, I would say that trying to adapt a MIDI device into a game controller would be…hard work at best, futile at worst. But basically you’d need to write a piece of software that would translate MIDI note numbers into keystrokes…which now that I think more about it may not be that difficult…the hard part would be going the other way.
However - there are many ways to use an iPad to control a computer, and/or BMS. Either as a game pad/controller or directly as a track pad/mouse and/or keyboard. I have apps on my iPad(s) that do both - the game pad one is called xReva, and is neat because it turns your iPad into a configurable, customizable game pad/controller that connects over wifi (I think…it may use Bluetooth). The my other fav one is RC Trackpad, which unfortunately isn’t available any longer - but that one allows me to use my iPad(s) as a wifi connected keyboard and mouse. Though RC Trackpad is not longer available, there are others out there that do this - I just happened to settle on RC Trackpad because I like the completeness of it’s keyboard layout…and wifi connectivity - when makes it an encrypted wireless keyboard.

Thank you Stevie, I hadn’t heard of xReva previously… may just have to check that out. Appreciate you sharing your thoughts.

From “Guitar Hero” to “BMS Hero”!…but why are we bringing my CNC router build into the mix?
