Second install
-
Must I redownload the U1 setup if I want to do a second install of BMS? I tried re-running my original setup.exe and it detects my current install.

Why have a 2nd install? Just curious…
I think the SOP is to copy your current folder and name it something else, so for example, you’ll have \Falcon BMS 4.33.4 as your original install folder and you’ll have \Falcon BMS 4.33.4 Backup as your copy folder. You can then apply any changes to your current \Falcon BMS 4.33.4 folder, ie, install theatres, modify files, etc. and play with that. If you want to use your backup, first rename \Falcon BMS 4.33.4 to something like \Falcon BMS 4.33.4 Modified to keep a copy of your changes, then you can just either rename your \Falcon BMS 4.33.4 Backup to \Falcon BMS 4.33.4 or you can simply make a new \Falcon BMS 4.33.4 folder and copy in the contents of the Backup folder.
I hope that made sense….

For the second FO server test they want a vanilla install. So rather than trying to remove all my mods and then put them back after I just want a fresh install.

Ah, I see.

Good call on their part.

Make a backup of the registry and then delete the BMS key. Once you’re done, you’ll have to point the key in the registry back to the “modded” install.
Is that any easier or any safer than just swapping folder names/contents?

Why would you need to uninstall/remove the key? You have one key (is it possible to have two??) and one active folder. No need to copy stuff each time you want to swap, just change the folder name and you should be good to go.
From what I understand, the OP just needs a vanilla install and a modded install, so he can install the game once, configure it as needed for vanilla install, copy that, and then modify the game as he wishes. If he wants to return to the vanilla install, all he has to do is rename the modded folder, then put the default name onto the vanilla folder.
I just don’t think recommending registry edits is a good idea…. a lot of people know how to copy-paste-rename stuff. I bet there are far fewer who know how to edit the registry, and even less who are comfortable doing so…

The Method Ice details has served myself and other squad members well.
I started doing this in early 00 with all the different flavors of 4.0 108/107, however it was not always possible.

Simple.
1. Copy the current folder
2. Set Korea KTO as active theater.
3. Export registry entry.
4. Note callsign.
5. Uninstall
6. Install vanilla.
7. Use same callsign from 3.
8. For ease place an empty txt file named for reference like vanilla setup in the vanilla setup folder, and one in the other folder like my_setup.txt
9. Use folders rename and u r done. The registry entry wouldn’t conflict Mortesil? (General - retorical question)
U have a and b. A points to default falcon folders b not.
If I run falcon b wouldn’t use the default folders?
The exe will look in to registry for it’s default entry and use values.
So he must have one falcon registry entry and each time he must change the registry values to point to the correct folder. This can be done easier with just a right click -> merge command on the exported key file.
Or create a batch file to do so and just double click it.

He already has a modded install. He needs to get back to a vanilla.
So he can do it like I said on my first reply….

Copy his currently-modded folder, give it a name, so at this point, he has two copies of his modded game –- one in the default folder, one in a renamed folder… uninstall the game, re-install it, done. Modded folder has the, um, modded game
, default (active) folder has the vanilla game. To swap between the two, just change the folder names. Much, much safer than going into the registry files where a boo-boo there can mean much worse problems.

Your first post did not say to uninstall.
I did not think it was necessary to do a step-by-step
I am also not saying your method is not valid…. the only issue I have with your method is the fact that the user has to go into the registry to make edits. Like I said, this isn’t something most people do and to screw up in this area isn’t really a good thing. If you’re comfortable with doing so, then by all means. If not, the “longer” method is much, much safer.

Thanks all for the replies! I will try and get it sorted out in a day or two.
