Dogfight mode radar mode
-
Yes, I can do that. But Is it possible to have bore as default?
-
it IS default, the radar is snoozed.
You could rig a macro on your joystick so that pressing the dogfight button makes the joystick send the keypresses for dogfight and then TMS up immediately afterwards, but this is not an option available to F-16 pilots.
Just press TMS up to un snooze the radar.

It’s not always advisable to activate the radar automatically when switching to dogfight mode:
- The target already is in range for your eyeball Mk1 sensor
- In dogfight mode you have heaters active which are passive trackers so you can approach unnoticed (if the target is unaware of your presence)
- The target probably doesn’t use his countermeasures (flares) before it’s too late for him.
The only skill you have to master is to get the diamond of the seeker in the HUD locked onto the target when uncaging. The diamond has a certain travel along the HUD, once you know that, it should be relatively easy. And the ‘tone’ beats a DLZ rectangle anytime for immersion

in fairness, they also serve completely different purposes.
-
But they both give an indication of the hit chance, don’t they?
-
Thank you very much, It all make sense. I will use TMS up and listen to the tone.
As real as it gets

You can also link the heat-seeking sensor to your HMCS by setting the missile to BORE instead of SLAVE in the SMS-page. That way, you can get (high) off-boresight shots without alerting your target of a lock.

Eh, nope. TMS up activates the radar.

Nope. The DLZ gives an idea of the chance of the missile hitting, and its an indication - you can hit targets that it indicates impossible to hit, and you can miss targets inside the ideal zone.
The missile tone of the sidewinder gives an indication of how strongly the missile seeker is tracking a target. If you cannot hear the tone strongly, it means that the missile seeker has not acquired its target.
To track, the missile needs a good heat difference between the background and the target, all the way into the missiles end game. The tone indicates the missiles current heat delta, not its relative energy or chance to hit. That is the DLZ’s job.

Very good explainations here!!
Thank you all!
