Cougar repaint
-
Does anyone know the best way to repaint the cougar, managed to finally get my hands on one from the ebay.
But the paint is all flaking off, the seller said they used the wrong cleaning product on it.1.Which paint should i use?
2.How to keep the decals for the switchs?I have been wanting a cougar for years, all the axis and buttons work great just looks a bit shabby.
Any advice/pics of work in progress would be great thanks.

I’ve never painted a Cougar, but other diecast (pot metal) things. You can use plain ol’ enamel spray paint, Krylon or whatever. Thin coats to avoid runs. If you are starting at bare metal, use a self-etching primer. That will help prevent paint chipping once cured. Clear coat seems like overkill, unless you are adding waterslide decals.
The original switch labels are screen printed (or similar) over the paint. I don’t see how you can keep the labels unless you don’t repaint those areas. You can buy blank decal sheets for inkjet or laser printers, but how many printers will print white? In use though, after you get used to the layout, you won’t ever look at the labels again. I understand wanting it to look original if possible.
I saw somewhere (here?) a guy painted his stick and and throttle bases gray. Looked really cool. Not that I’m gonna bother doing that, but if I had to repaint anyway I would.

Thanks for the advice buzzkill, will post some pics when I get it done.
Many thanks bud. -
I’d be interested to know if/how you get the thing back to bare metal before any refinish, please

Sandpaper? Paint stripper? Little of both?

Regular printers injjet or laser can’t print white. White is the absence of colour for a printer
You have to use an ALPS printer for that.On the real throttle, it’s engraved, so it’s easy to get it back white

I tried several different paint-strippers, a hot air gun, and a gas blowlamp - none of which touched it (Warthog stick). My last option is to take it to a mate to have it sand-blasted.

Maybe it’s powder coated instead of painted. Don’t know what that means as far as stripping, I’m not an expert on finishes. Sand blasting will get the finish off for sure, but will likely eat into the metal to some extent IMO.

Yep, but that will be quite visible.

Agreed. I wouldn’t bother trying to do the labels if I needed to paint one.
-
If I were to do it, I would create a Template masks with a vinyl cutter or with photoetch and spray it white, Simply

Thanks for all the help/suggestions people.
Will post some pics when i get it done
