Request BMS Cougar file, mapped same as real jet
-
That’s all. I have figured out that my old files I saved from years past, for various versions of F4, Allied Force, FreeFalcon, the SP series, all of that, none of them work properly when loaded up in the Cougar and used with BMS.
So…I’m requesting up to date files to run my Cougar with.
I have very limited functionality as things stand now. Basic flight is possible but most button and hat switch functions don’t work.
Yeah, I could probably put a lot of time into figuring out everything one feature at a time, and build my own files, but could I just get someone to send me working files instead? Or tell me where to find them.
By preference I want the Cougar mapped exactly to match real F-16 control mapping. Right down to using the top hat as trim.
I’m not going to complain, but the last time I had everything working perfectly and every HOTAS control was working and properly mapped, was before BMS was a thing. And that’s probably why I stopped playing for a number of years. The changes that were made would have caused me to have to relearn almost everything at a point in my life when I didn’t have time to deal with that. So I dropped it.
If I’m missing something that’s really simple and obvious, I apologize, but I have looked and since the Cougar isn’t exactly the latest and greatest thing, the knowledge resources for it are not as plentiful or up to date as they once were.

I can recommend using Kolbes Keyfile Editor spreadsheet to generate a generic cougar keyfile. It works great in LibreOffice too so you don’t even need an office license.
Make sure to use directx for your cougar though, not TARGET if you can avoid it.
The keyfile editor sheet can be found in the “keyfiles and input” directory of your BMS installation.
All the best,
Uwe

I hear you. Took me a bunch of time and trials to re-edit my cougar files and set up the HOTAS the way I liked. I can send you my files, though I’d have to write up the mapping unless you know how to go in and look. Best way is to meet up on Discord and I can walk you through it quick, prob have you up to speed with editing in 10 min.

Totally honest confession here: I don’t have Discord and have ignored it. I’m not even quite sure what it does…as up to this point, I apparently haven’t even had any need for it.
For much the same reason I’m not on Twitter. Far as I know it offers me nothing that I’ve been missing and waiting for someone to offer to me.
I’ll dig into the manuals some more and try to reboot my brain concerning Cougar programming. My basic assumption, that legacy Cougar files would work, appears to be a false assumption. Now I need to learn the new way, the DirectX way.
I confess I’m a bit annoyed that this change was made. “Leave all well enoughs alone” is one of my mantras. (Another is, “A closed mouth gathers no foot.”)

What other periphals are you using with BMS? It should be pretty straightforward to create a nice cougar keyfile using the keyfile editor if your setup is not too complex.

Just the Cougar with rudder pedals at this time. I may at some point want to connect up some functional MFDs but that’s a maybe and in the future.

Then it should be rather easy indeed.
Have a look at your bms devicesorting.txt file and make sure the cougar appears as the first device, then you can select it in Kolbe’s spreadsheet and generate an inital setup.
All the best,
Uwe

Buzzbomb,
What they said. Or just install the 4.35 Alternate Launcher , sit down with a real life HOTAS diagrams, and have your set up in <10minutes. Having the Cougar will make that even easier.
One thing I did notice, in my Warthog setup, was that the trim axis’ didn’t work on the Hat. But if you assign it by keyboard commands the jet trims just fine -
