How do I…
-
I’ve been reading through a few threads here and there but can’t seem to find what I’m after. I am dipping a toe into 3DS Max and fancy having a go at creating one or two models. Nothing fancy, just some basic buildings shapes, etc.
Is there anywhere I can find scales, etc.? For example, in LOD Editor, I can view a “house” which looks like it is built on top of a hemispherical tunnel (CT #94) but I have no idea of the actual scale of the model. Is it possible to export the model and import it into 3DS Max?
I guess I am hoping someone can point me to a decent “How Do I…” guide for creating things like this.
Or, in other words, where do I start!?
TIA

You have to setup a plane and set the grid size to the proper units. You can do this once you set the plane, set that plane to the proper size 10x10 or 20x20, what-have-you. Then put the building on that plane….or a city block etc. Scaling and those tools are located in the top toolbar, above the windows.
You’ll see the settings for making the plane and other objects on the right hand panel, first tab - most of this is on the right hand panel, not the top tool bar. You have to set the plane in the window before the settings menu opens for setting sizes ect.
You can omit the plane also, and just start with a box, and scale it that way…using the box settings that will open once you setup a box. You can scale the size this way by simply using the grid in the window, which is G OR typing the proper units and size in the right hand settings tabs. Although setting the proper plane size is a lot easier if your new to 3DSM.
Lookup youtube; “how to setup plane and proper scaling”…there should be alot of vids on this.
Good luck!

Hey Malc,
a) You can messure objects in LE, … look at it’s .doc for a how to.
b) you can export *.LOD to *.3ds, using lod3dsconv.exe
c) You can create a simple box (1,8m high) in 3DSMax for a human reference and build your house by eye.
d) Build your model in RL scale in 3DSMax, Wavey’s LOD-Exporter will do fine.
I hope this helps.;)
Cheers,

I could make buildings and an actual 3d city based on a satellite map or topo map fairly easy. You can actually import a topo map of a city or wilderness into 3DS max, then a setting will create this map instantly in 3D with all the low/mid poly details. It’s an extremely powerful program.
I’m in college learning auto design, cad and 3DSM just to mention a few, my third degree. I’m tired of selling money for the last 20-years, looking to move into this field in the next year or so.

TIP: When viewing the model, hold the ATL + middle mouse button and the mouse will pan the view around. It’s a huge pain in the azz to use that viewing block thingy in the top right of the window.
ALT+W will expand the current view window to full window mode, which is easier to work with detail this way.
Good luck Malc!
