Launching criteria for HARM to AI wingmen
-
I’ve been having a blast flying DEAD against SA10 sites in Bear trap. The AI wingman respond very well when asked to ‘attack target’ with the GM radar as SOI. However, for some reason the AI is more reluctant to release the HARM at the SA17 site, sometimes flying all the way into the air defense envelope and still not releasing. I tried rejoining and tried again, no luck. So am wondering what are the conditions for a successful AI HARM release, like order need to be given 30 nm out, no enemy fighters in the vicinity, or need a weapons free command?

@spotdott in my experience, follow waypoints, before the target waypoint AI will ask permission to engage. The reason that AI engages sa-17 might be sa-10 is already destroyed or destroyed before HARM arrives, so HARM seeker will go for another target (this depends on mode).

I believe AI will only engage with HARM if someone in your package is targeted/locked with radar (FC I think).
Mav explained this either in this forum or on the Falcon Lounge Discord.

@CriticalMass afaik it is for SEAD mission, not DEAD

@slient but HARM for DEAD? I guess it happens.
I read that he was SEAD in a DEAD package. Maybe between the lines weren’t there.

@CriticalMass mostly 2 two-ship packages are created, one loaded with HARMs and other loaded with Mavericks or sometimes GBUs. Also HARM is good also for DEAD missions; long range and high speed.

Btw it is a bit unrelated to topic, but best way to kill sa-10s is ECM on, launch HARMs with some spacing at 40-45 miles, DON’T turn because ECM provides cover for HARMs. First hits flap lid, second hits big bird and mission successful, sa-10 is disabled for some time.

@slient I think I figured it out. The best way is actually to lock on the SA17 when you see it on HARM’s HAS mode. The wingman fires almost immediately.
