Great 3 Part Article Comparing Viper vs. Hornet.
-
Looks like this guy is/was a Navy guy who did a Service Swap w/ the Air Force. I’ve posted the 3rd portion of the article, the first two posts are mostly admin and startup related. But some very interesting commentary…'18’s aren’t set up for civilian ILS??
Looking forward to hearing everyones thoughts/opinions.
Enjoy

I think the ILS thing might depend a bit on the country… I know Aussie Hornets have a few niche differences from their USN brethren.
Very good read, a lot better than the last comparison I read between the two (where the author flat out states completely inaccurate falsehoods about the F-16, particularly the FLCS).

I didn’t note any inaccuracies. It was a pleasant if not fluffy article.

Bugs and Rhinos are far better than Vipers.
There, I said it.
Flare to land = squat to pee.
-
you need technique to flare. Plus it looks smooth as opposed to the slamming of the F18s
:munch:

This actually sounds more like a USAF guy that did a USN exchange…and note what he has to say about the AOA bracket in the HUD between the two jets.
Aussie Hornets (and some others - including Blue Angels) do in fact have C-ILS. If most of what you’re doing in the USN is landing on the CV so there really isn’t much need for anything other than the Carrier system, though why the two aren’t cross-compatible is a bit beyond me. Either way, in bad weather they can certainly divert anywhere there is a TACAN or GPS approach available.
Navy “flare” (when you need to pee…) technique is actually pretty easy - squeek on a bit of power to arrest your sink rate just prior to touchdown…even works in a Viper, from what I do with BMS.
…fly Navy!

What’s wrong with squatting to pee? Some of the best pilots at my local club have to. It’s not 1950, dude. Get with the program.
