Possible to convert r.550 Magic II to a radar guided missile?
-
1. Is it possible to convert the SRM R.550 Magic II carried by the Mirage 2000-D to a long range BVR missile?
2. If so, how?
-
Why would you want to do that ?
-
It is nonsense.
R550 Magic II is a F2 short range IR missile.
Or, I suspect you want to use this slot to replace by another missile…

I wanted to give the mirage 2000-D some BVR capability. In the Israel theater I tried using mica on the hard points but they messed up everything else. Therefore, I was thinking if it were possible to use F4browse in order to make it something like the AMRAAM.

Why not the Mica IR
Makes more sense.
Anything else would be so unBMS
Edit: messing with the sensor on the R550 is not a smart thing to do , it will have wider repercussions on AI and game play I would think.
Fly something else if you don’t like the 2000-D.

Speaking about real life, MICA IR won’t really fit well in the 2000D for the simple reason that its current radar (the Antilope 5TC) is nothing but blind in air-to-air, D pilots mostly rely on link 16 to find aerial targets (and L16 was only installed since mid/end 2000s…).
MAGIC II seeker also outperforms radar in most situations. Furthermore, Antilope won’t be able to operate with MICA IR as it (and other onboard systems) is not coded for it. The D also lacks aircraft-missile link (LAM), so MICA significant range advantage wouldn’t be exploited at its maximum.
There were plans to replace the Antilope radar with RDY-3, but I think the update is on hold. -
Alright, I’ll stick to the R.550.
