Back to playing BMS been a while.

Hi all its been a while, never wanted to stop playing BMS but had problems with PC and hoping i dont get anymore. Back when i was playing i was still on 4.32 which i still have now and am getting used to it again with the training TE’s. I’ve read some posts on here about 4.33 not being available or that it was temporarily unavailable. Is this still the case or is it available to download again? thanks.
P.S. Great to be back on here, been playing a lot of CMANO but doesnt compare to being in the pit and flying itself!

So Microprose have complained about 4.33? what exactly is it they have an issue with?
-
Yeah Mav-jp’s FM is the best!, that’s the one for me, that’s what nails it for me, just love flying F-16 Falcon BMS, awesome!, so I’m not surprised to see people return to the GREAT ONE.

Microprose went belly up quite some time ago. The new owners are Retrosim which is a subsidiary of Tommo Inc.
No public (or to my knowledge private) complaint has been made. The BMS development team are in discussions with Retrosim about BMS, and while the discussions are ongoing, the distribution of BMS is on hold. Public discussion about the nature of the private discussion or the aspect of those part of the discussion is not likely to improve odds of an outcome favorable to all, so threads on the topic are closed.
Lets not make this another thread to be closed, and instead discuss something less likely to get closed - CMANO, DCS, welcoming a new member, anything

Well i do have a problem with my Delan clip i use for head tracking. I’m using sellotape to keep it attached to my headphones and i have to have it in a position where the LED’s are pointing up at my PS3 eye cam. After a short while it slides back down. Does anyone else use a Delan clip and what do you use to keep it in place? it would be fine if it didnt have to be pointed upwards…
Also been playing a lot of CMANO…does anyone else play this? recently finished a great scenario called Canarys Cage took me ages to complete- also the Vietnam scenario called Down town. Both CMANO and Falcon BMS compliment each other well imo. I was actually playing BMS for a while before i bought CMANO and when i started playing that i already understood a fair amount about air operations. Whats’ so great about BMS is that not only is it a flight sim but also a tactical war strategy sim with its’ awesome dynamic campaign, diverse range of a/c, ground units and the tactical reference so you can find out how the weapons and systems work.

I used to hang out in Baloogan’s Jabbr room playing CMANO. I haven’t actually tried Canary’s Cage - have you played through Operation Lightning Strike?

Ah- Operation Lightning Strike, i’m coming to that soon as i’m playing through the standalone scenarios. Canarys Cage is great where you have a surface task force centered on a carrier with harriers, electronic warfare, AWACS and anti submarine warfare a/c. You have to use a/c from 3 other airbases in Spain too. I watched a video by Baloogan on Op Lightning Strike, watched it to a point. Have you played CMANO much lately? theres now about 300 community made scenarios along with the standalone ones. Apache85 has just made a great scenario on the Falklands which i’ll play soon. Though next i’ll play through Duelists 1989- a Royal Navy carrier battlegroup against a soviet one and using a/c based at RAF Lossiemouth and Kinloss.
Lightning Strike looks a juicy one, i like how you have to use drones to find the terrorist SCUD launchers. Lot of a/c to manage in that one, have you played through it?

Through is not the right word, I have played a lot of it but so far I havent had it go as intended…
Havent played it a lot lately, certain limitations with the aircraft bugged me so I stopped playing it. I do note that the devs have been working on fixing a lot of those problems though, I had a look at the current release a few weeks back and was pleasantly surprised.

Yea v1.10 was released last week but you’re right in what you’re saying there are limitations and some things bugged me like how i had a strike package which would form up and wait for entire group with all escorts after take off before flying to the ingress leg but after refueling, the strike group leave their escorts behind whilst they refueled. Brought it up to the devs and they’ve apparently fixed it for v1.11. Number of things have bugged me but not game breaking.
-
Not game breaking, but as far as I was concerned, definitely simulation breaking. It is good they are taking steps to fix some of those things - some studios simply dont even try.

What things bothered you about CMANO that limited the simulation?

Loved Harpoon 1 and 2.
But CMANO is ridiculously overpriced andso have not gotten it, much as I enjoy the genre.

Some small things, some not so small. Fighter aircraft mostly share kinematics. Same acceleration, same top speed, same service ceiling… acceleration incredibly high, climbs incredibly slow, inability to run down a foe in a less capablr aircraft.
None of those things are a massive issue for a game, but for a sim marketed as being ‘relentless realism’ and at the price they charged, certain aspects of it were not up to the admittedly high standard I expected.
With that said its a good game, and one whose value keeps increasing, what with the updates and improvements. Used to be a number of other things I complained about in CMANO, and the devs went and fixed most of them. So theres that.
-
There are differences between most a/c in kinematics in terms of agility and average climb rate but i would agree in that too many fighter/attack a/c seem to have 925 kts as their top speed. There are some good examples of differing speeds though such as the AV-8B Harrier not having afterburners with top speed of 570 kts. In Canarys Cage they couldnt chase down some Mirages as they were too slow for them. In the last update they’ve implemented weight dependant a/c kinematics so for a/c with heavy bomb loadouts makes them easy pickings for fighters with just a few BVR/WVR missiles. Still i would have expected them to have implemented these things some time ago, however updates are being made continuously and stuff is being implemented. Have to say though now i might not be playing CMANO for some time.

Actually I think AC dependent performance based on loadout was added in 1.07 IIRC. Of course, the loadout system is something else that bugs me. I can appreciate the huge amount of work that went into the program. Certain parts of it are survey sim, and others not quite study sim. From what I understand their sensor modelling is quite detailed. Certainly their shipboard physics is detailed enough. I just get peeved that I cant compare fighter aircraft performance to their respective performancr manuals and get sane figures.
Not really a complaint for a game to worry about - its only for a sim that that is a concern really.
For the case of agility, I have to admit some disappointment in the air to air tactics employed by fighters in CMANO. Id like more control over how they fight, but lacking that Id like more sane default tactics. Though again, this is something the devs have worked to improve, and it shows. Version 1.00 virtually didnt have air tactics, and since then fighters are much smarter, and you have more control over their missions - the mechanics of which are even based on player input! Granted, I still think the Falcon AI is a lot smarter than the CMANO one, but then its not a fair comparison, given the amount of work the F4 AI has had over the decades, and the fact that its a larger part of F4 than it is of CMANO - so in turn, a higher percentage of developer time can be focused on it.
Its a good game, and Im not unhappy for buying it. I do regret the price I paid for it, though I will concede that with updates my opinion of a ‘fair’ price has more than doubled since I purchased it. I do also regret that it was advertised as being something that I think its not - the ‘relentless realism’ taline is not an unreachable goal, but also not one they have reached. On the whole though its not like its bad or unenjoyable in general - there are just a few things that really bug the pedant in me.

I know it is expensive, i bought it in the summer sale on steam for £30 which is half price. With no discount its’ £60 which is $85 US. The thing i’m finding with CMANO is that each new patch will improve the game but something that worked fine before will be bugged- and then gets fixed for the next patch which i find a bit frustrating as then you’re waiting for the next patch.
-
Dont worry, thats how all patches work for everything, not a poor reflection on the CMANO devs!
99 little bugs in the code,
99 little bugs…Take a build down,
patch it around,
Theres 117 little bugs in the code! -
Btw is it just 4.33 that cant be downloaded? can people still download 4.32? just read an angry post from someone who just registered. Even though he sounds less than pleasant maybe he could still have downloaded 4.32 which is still great which is what i’m playing myself…until hopefully 4.33 becomes available again.
-
I think BMS are presently not making their work available for download here. Presumably the torrents for 4.32 still exist, but they are not linked here out of respect for the BMS team’s wishes.
