BMS 4.33 on a school LAN
-
So lets say I obtain a Falcon 4.0 download from gog.com then install a BMS 4.33 server on a school LAN (only accessible on the school LAN).
Q1) What are the licensing issues I need to be aware of if any?
Q2) Can I install as many copies of BMS 4.33 on the LAN as I like from a single Falcon 4.0 download or CD?
Q3) Does it matter if the project is for recreation or academic use? -
AFIK, as long as it is not for commercial use, you have a green light. You might need to purchase a copy of the game for each machine…not sure if this is required or not.
As far as academic, depends on your meaning. If it is part of a tuition fee it would be considered commercial, I think. If your in a dorm and want to learn the sim with a group, I think that is O.K.
Boxer would be the one to ask about this.

The aim is to organise an extra-curricular club for school kids, the objective would be to introduce / encourage interests in aviation, air combat, 3D design and simulation etc.
Q4) Would it make a difference to the license if the project was done at a public or private school?
-
I’m afraid I can’t answer that question.
Boxer and the other Dev’s have made it pretty clear that BMS now have an agreement with the current owner and that any misuse of the product will result in a permanent ban. I would wait for an answer from one of the Dev’s, as they are sure to come across this thread within the next 24 hrs. or less.
FWIW, I hope you are able to achieve your goal. Sounds like a great project with the multiple objectives offered.

In my LAN scenario does Falcon 4.0 / BMS 4.33 need to be installed locally on client PCs? Or is a “volume licence” for the LAN possible? Admittedly the Falcon 4.0 cost is not prohibitive but I just wanted to understand the options.

To the best of my understanding, it doesnt need to be installed locally on each client to comply with the EULA, but AFAIK you need it to be installed locally for BMS to function at all, so it seems a moot point.

Q3) Does it matter if the project is for recreation or academic use? From a legal license standpoint, every computer with an installation of Falcon 4.0 / BMS would need a purchased copy of falcon 4.0.
Example being:
1 server
2 clients
=3 required copies of Falcon 4.0.As it stands now, there is no difference between a academic, or recreational license. All installation instances need to be properly licensed to be legal.

I did contact gog.com support and they don’t offer any volume licence option for Falcon 4.0.
