RE: all types of f-16's cockpit and sounds files mod
@sheref Looks great, thanks for sharing! Love the worn look of the cockpit and that the ICP is more easily readable now. I followed @Magnum1964 installation instructions and it worked. However I don’t know what to do with the sound files (from f16_s sounds WIP v.3.00_ 4.37.7z). Any idea how to install those?

Falcon BMS VR not working on Linux
I know that Falcon BMS is a Windows game and that it does not have Linux support, however I am hoping that we can work together to troubleshoot an issues with BMS 4.37 not running in SteamVR on Linux (BMS update 1 is installed). BMS runs great on Linux in 2D, it simply does not run in the VR headset (Valve Index) and just runs on the monitor. “g_nVRHMD” is set to “1” in Falcon BMS.cfg.
I also posted an issue report on Valve’s Proton Github repo and hope that they can find a solution, however this may take a long time. The issue report is here if you’re interested: https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton/issues/3991#issuecomment-1443831285
Log files from my error report on Github:
System report: https://gist.github.com/SquadFM/f1642250e9a823f3d1e3fc073e9eed99
https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton/files/10825622/Falcon.BMS_d3d11.log
https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton/files/10825625/Falcon.BMS_dxgi.logSome background info: I have been using VR on Linux for a few years now and almost all games work with great performance (incl. DCS and IL2 in VR). Games are usually Windows-only games and us Linux users rely on Proton, which is a compatibility layer that emulates Windows. Proton is part of Steam.
I am hoping that there is an opportuntity to partner with you to fix the VR issue on Linux. Not sure if you have the interest and bandwidth for it, but at least I wanted to ask and offer my help. If there are any additional log files I can provide to identify the root of the problem please let me know.

[Linux] Alternative Launcher does not show checkmarks
On my end the Alternative Launcher does not show any checkmarks in any of the checkboxes for any enabled features. For example in the screenshot below “Pilot Model” and “Smart Scaling” are enabled but the checkboxes show as empty. Clicking on it multiple times doesn’t change that. I assume a library has to be installed through winetricks, but after a lot of experimenting I wasn’t able to figure out which one.
Currently the following libraries are installed: dotnet40, dotnet48, corefonts, vcrun2015, dxvk (which also installed d3dcompiler_43, d3dcompiler_47, d3dx9). I am on Manjaro with Wine-staging 8.5.1, using Lutris as a launcher. I followed these intructions https://github.com/SquadFM/Falcon-4-BMS-Linux#falcon-4-bms-on-linux-with-wine-and-lutris-tested-with-bms-437
Tagging @Xeno and @Ferde since I know you use Linux.
Has anyone found a fix to show checkmarks in the Alternative Launcher?

RE: Install / Run Falcon 4 / BMS on Linux
@ravenlost Sorry Steam is throwing you a curveball. On my system only the “Steam (steam) 1.0.0.76-2” version is installed. Other than that nothing odd stands out. You don’t happen to use multiple Steam libraries on different drives (this has caused me some grief with other games in the past)?
Since you’re using Manjaro too, you could check if any of the packages I list in my doc here are missing: https://github.com/SquadFM/Gaming-on-Linux
If all else fails, and you can get a non-steam version of Falcon 4.0 (e.g. from GOG), you can also install Falcon through Wine directly (Lutris is a good front end which I use). I started writing a guide on that which I could post if you need it. It’s still a little work in progress but it should do.
Edit: I uploaded the Wine/Lutris installations instructions for the standalone version of Falcon 4.0, which you can get from GOG.

RE: Install / Run Falcon 4 / BMS on Linux
@ravenlost I agree with Xeno. Proton or Wine shouldn’t make a difference.
Also, I can’t comment on AMD as I am using proprietary nvidia drivers (I am planning to buy an AMD card in the future though).
A reinstall sometimes makes sense. I also had some troubles on my end which were fixed after I set everything up from scratch. You could try to give the Wine/Lutris installation a try first, which may work better on your system.

RE: Install / Run Falcon 4 / BMS on Linux
@ravenlost Great to hear that you were able to install BMS! I hope the performance issues are fixed by using the open source AMD drivers. Thanks for the recommendation to add a note to the guide (i just did and learned something new). Being able to use good performing open source drivers is another good reason (for me) to get an AMD GPU in the future. I hope everything works out with the installation and that you can jump into BMS next.
I am currently running BMS through Lutris too. One thing you might want to consider doing is setting an FPS limit, which could help your GPU to run less hot and consume less power. It can also sometimes help to run a game smoother without micro stutters. In Lutris right-click on the BMS launcher > Configure > System options > FPS limit - I usually set 60 FPS which is sufficient in most games, but obviously you can set any value.

@ravenlost I’m a little lost on this one. Maybe these threads are helpful?
https://github.com/lutris/docs/blob/master/InstallingDrivers.md#amd
Not sure though if Vulcan is needed for BMS, can’t hurt to install these packages though:

@ravenlost Here’s the cold start guide https://github.com/SquadFM/Falcon-4-BMS-Guide. Let me know if something is unclear. And enjoy the “day off” I also enjoy the peace and quiet every now and then, haha! Especially in the morning when I can just do my thing before everyone wakes up and have a cup of coffee.

RE: Install / Run Falcon 4 / BMS on Linux
@ravenlost Awesome, great to hear that your HOTAS works and you’re all set to get going! There’s a ton of screenshots on suggested HOTAS binds in the BMS manual and on the BMS and DCS forums and I am sure there are binds for your exact HOTAS setup. If you want check out my current binds (work in progress) https://drive.google.com/file/d/1poYZH6B1lR_TJP1BRuVpIK1J2rGwsQr9/view?usp=share_link
What helped me understand the written manuals better was watching a video on a topic first and then reading through the chapter in the training manual. That way I knew from the video where a switch is and what it does. At least that works for me, knowing that everyone has their own learning style.
To get started I can recommend these two videos by X-CHECK:
- The first one explains the UI and campaign settings and how to create kneeboards, which is initially not needed if you focus right now on the cold start procedure. Definitely good to check out though to understand how BMS works.
- The second video focuses on cold start and flying a basic mission. Awesome explanations and I took a lot of notes from this video, so you should be able to follow along.
There’s also a Falcon BMS learning playlist on Youtube which has great videos: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLjcJgAsk-Vune5I-vtZT-0YKDdyVm-YDP
Also, another tool that helped me is Recoll (which is in your distros repo or on www.recoll.org). It indexes a folder with documents and whenver I am looking up a term, e.g. CCIP, it searches across all documents and shows the results and from there you can open the respective PDF. Kind of like Google, but for your local files.
I set Recoll to index the BMS folder that contains all manuals. Pretty useful as you’ll often find information in the training manual and the more detailed explanations are in the -1 or -34 for example. I’d suggest to enable phrase search in Recoll > Preferences > Search parameters > Enable “Automatically add phrase to simple searches”. This is usefull for searches with more than one word.
If you want let’s connect and fly a training mission in the future together. I am still learning (and will be for a long time), but I am already pretty good at crashing the jet
Happy Flying!

RE: Install / Run Falcon 4 / BMS on Linux
@ravenlost Man, Murphy really has it in for you, lol! Glad you can at least now play with better graphics and FPS.
Sucks that your joystick is now broken, but you can at least learn the cold start procedure. You’ll only need mouse and keyboard for that one. If you want I can share my written cold start procedure if that’s helpful.
Also, I was curious to see how much a X52 goes for and Amazon shows $199 with throttle. If that’s really the case and you’re planning on sending the stick back, I would suggest to take a look at the VKB Next Premium stick, which goes for $165 (plus shipping). It’s a great stick which a ton of buttons and the overall quality is amazing. I’m sure there are other great sticks out there but I am really amazed by this one. Make sure to buy the premium version as it has an additional mini stick (good for countermeasures) and some other buttons. https://www.vkbcontrollers.com/products/gladiator-nxt-evo-space-combat-edition-right-hand?variant=39887803613302
If you still need a throttle you can get used TWCS throttles for <$100 on ebay (new they’re around $130 on Amazon). https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_nkw=twcs+throttle&_sacat=0
The throttle has a ton of buttons and works quite well too. I know it costs overall a bit more but it might be worth it to spend a little more now if you afford it instead of buying a new stick in the future if X52 decides to break again.Anyhow, great to see you’re on the right track!
