Falcon 4 installation & BMS 4.33 U1
-
Hello all.
I need as much help as I can get from BMS comunity in:I have an original Falcon 4 Box (in attachment you can see it), I think is the Microprose Hasbro one (I saw both logos in intro video inside cd).
I 've tried to install the Falcon 4 but just after the autorun dialog box, wich ask you if you want to run, install or exit (the “install” and “exit” otions are available) the setup stops in my system (Win10 x64). I tried all the compatibility modes and always run the setup.exe as administrator but nothing. Setup never starts.
Q 1. How I can install the Falcon 4 in Win10 x64 system? I guess after that will be piece of cake to install the BMS 4.33 U1.
Q 2. I need to have the game cd in drive to run the BMS 4.33 U1 everytime?
Q 3. What I miss with version 1.08 of Falcon 4 and how can update my original Falcon 4 to 1.08 if it’s in older version (i guess it is)?First and above all thanks for your time and I’m very sorry if all the above was answered in other threads and I didn’t saw them.
Please just point me what and were to look and I will. -
A1. I put the Falcon 4.0 CD in and ran the installer (minimum size) without problem on Windows 10 x64.
A2. No.
A3. Just install Falcon 4.0 then forget about it. BMS is a separate program entirely. -
I didn’t have problems either, installed on WinX x64.
I didn’t start it specifically with administrator, and can’t remember if it asked me automatically. Can you launch the setup (without the autostart part)?
Do you have other applications/antivirus running while trying to install?
And did you try a system restart?Pure speculation, doesn’t count if the installer isn’t an installer in an installer:
You may try is to check your %userprofile%\AppData\Local\Temp for the falcon setup to launch it manually.
Perhaps it did the extraction but wasn’t able to launch then. -
1. Haven´t tried myself yet. I also have Windows 10 64 and have the original falcon 4.0 binder edition. Can´t think of anything right now…is the disc damaged?
2. No
3. You don´t need to upgrade to 1.08 to install
And yes, 2 and 3 had already been answared elsewhere.

@Frederf thank you for your time viewing and answer!

@SnowSky:Do you have other applications/antivirus running while trying to install?
And did you try a system restart?Antivirus and programs off and restart tried several times. Nothing.

The disk is looks like new. No scraches, fingertips etc on surface. Looks like brand new! Thanks for answer mate.

Thanks for your response!Stay aware that the folder name might be also just a random string of numerics/alphanumerics.
In case clear the temp folder and then launch the setup immediately for easier visibilityEdit: Does the setup process remain in the taskmanager? or does it truly abort?
Check EventViewer (eventvwr.msc) for errors/warnings/infos -
Hmmm just tried installing from HDD the old falcon 4.0 on my work laptop and it was a total no-go. Tried to mount as virtual cd also but no joy. Tried compatibility troubleshoot of Win10 but no joy, tried xpsp2 and xpsp3 and as admin for both but no joy.
Will try from the actual cd but still is strange.
Don’t recall Win10 version only that it’s 64 bit upgraded from 8.1. -
I currently have the same issue on Win 7 x64. I will continue to try and I’ll let you know if I discover anything.
-
Same issue here with Win 8.1 using original F4 CD from back in the day - “32-bit Setup Launcher (32 bit)” listed as a Background Process in Task Manager though. CPU use 0%

Start Windows in “safe mode” and then install Falcon 4.

Worked for me, thanks Miltiades
I’m guessing it’s a permissions thing, yet like the others I tried Run as Admin etc so why does Safe Mode work?
-
Thanks Ratfink +1. It worked for me in Windows 7 64bit too.
That was another evening wasted on the latest variation on the Falcon Dance! :dhorse:

First try XP SP3 compatibility mode. If that doesn’t work try booting safe mode. Safe mode means Windows starts with minimal amount of things loaded. Antivirus is an example of software that can keep your installation from working.

Weird. I installed mine on windows 7 x64 with SP1 without to run as admin.
I noticed that the autorun.exe didn’t worked and then i was run the setup.exe. Installation went smooth and i set a Compact installation type.
Everything went well as also the installation of BMS 4.33 U1.Note: Autorun didn’t run due to Avira anti-virus setting to block them ;).

Oh i knew that was coming…

The original Falcon 4 (1998 release) installed flawlessly on Windows 10 x64 for me. Put the CD in, waited for the autorun window and selected the install option. The installer initialization window sat for a while at 100%, but continued without a hitch after that.
Notes:
- My user account has administrator rights.
- The minimal install option for F4 (150 MB) will do.

Does the setup process remain in the taskmanager? or does it truly abort?
No, it stays at task manager but doing nothing. Stays like frozen. CPU use 0% as Ratfink says.
Edit: After this post I saw Miltiades one and issue solved!
-
I went in safe mode as Miltiades sayes and the installation went smooth at the end!!! Not run as admin and with out compatibility mode changes. Just went at safe mode, insert the cd and start the installation.
So that was Solved the Falcon 4 installation issue.
Thank you guys for your support!!!Cheers
