[Release] WeatherGen - A BMS random weather generator
-
Tyrant, thanks for the tool, I have been using it since you released it as it is easier to create realistic weather patterns then going into zyGrib and getting the real weather, which I still do every now and again. Only thing I can think of would be to add a slider to set the seed rather then punching in a random number. Currently I just go into xls and tell it to generate a random number that I then type in or just type in a random number, but I find when I type in a random number I tend to use similar numbers, hence using xls gives me better random numbers.

Ah - good idea. Would a “random” button next to the seed work? Sliders are actually sort of hard because of the computation involved - I have to play tricks to not try to update as the slider moves, since it takes about half a second to compute a new weather pattern.

A Random button w/ the option to change the number manually as it is in its current state. Yes, that would definitely be cool.

FYI, I will be starting another round of improvements on this in the next…3 to 4 weeks. If you’ve been using it and have feedback, I’d love to hear it. If you haven’t been using it because of some missing feature, I’d love to hear that as well. And if you stopped using it for some reason, then I’d really love your feedback on why.
First of all, thanks for your app. Could you make it possible
- to import a fmap
- enable users of your app to change cells like Weather Commander does?

Thanks - glad you find it useful.
As far as the feature requests go, I’m not sure it would make sense to do those things. WeatherGen works by generating an entire weather system from the parameters you put in. Importing an FMAP would depart from that strategy - it would no longer be generated.
Maybe I can ask instead what it is you’re trying to achieve? If it’s just to edit cells so you can control exactly what weather you get, then I think Weather Commander is a good tool for that already.
But perhaps what you want is a way to make the weather in one or two spots exactly how you want it. This is a common need for mission planners: they like not having to determine what the weather will be everywhere, but they still want, e.g. fair conditions at takeoff and over the target, but poor to inclement on recovery. For that, I plan to implement something where you can add “weather control zones”, in which you can say things like, “Starting at 0600, the weather around Kunsan will deteriorate from whatever it is to inclement. Then at 1000, it will start changing back to fair.”
Would that work for you? If not, if you can give me a bit more context for what you’d like to be able to do, maybe there’s something I can add to the tool

I just wanted to change cells like WC, but your idea is even better. It definitely would work for me, and I bet it would for everyone else.

So far…so good in ITO. No problems to report ATM.

Can someone please make this thread as sticky? As well as other weather tools?
I know Arty has his list but it is:
- too long,
- not very well described at the moment (perhaps due to its length).
The only thing I can dream is to combine your tool with Ahmed’s Grb2fmap and Weather Commander. You know, one tool to rule them all. Your UI is just brilliant: simple but powerfull, pretty but readable!
And about more real features: could you consider adding Autoplay button next to [Step Forward >>]?

Good idea, both sticky and auto step forward, I have almost broken my finger clicking so many times on that button.:uham::dhorse:

I’m not sure having this one stick is a good idea
First the stickies seems to be official notice from dev to modders about what to do or what to take into consideration prior to modding
Second i seeno reason why weather tools should have stickied topics, while other community mods may not.
third, stickies are usually NOT read. Having a sticky topic imho is the best way to have one information overlooked.Maybe, just maybe the best answer would be to create an extra child forum and assemble all weather tools in a weather mod forum, all 3d model in their own forum and all skins in their own room as well
? -
You might be right Red Dog. But what about copying the way ArmA forum handles the mods?
There are two subforums:
- COMPLETED
- DISCUSSION
Once anything working is published to community, original thread in DISCUSSION section get closed and mod is available in COMPLETED section (even if still under development). This way we can filter never ended/never published mods from more (or less) completed ones. What do you think?

Just saw this. Noted. Will consider it, especially as changes now under way make it more reasonable to do.
Can I ask for detail about what you’re trying to do? Are you looking for a certain pattern, a certain time, just like watching it move, or do you have some other goal?
Thanks!

Just wanted to mention here my request for TWX file format info, for two reasons. First, in case anyone with helpful information is watching this thread, but didn’t see that one. Second, because it contains some teaser info about one of the new WeatherGen features I’ve been working on.
Additional teaser: everything requested in this thread is already implemented in the next version. Plus more.

Can you add IKAROS map for next version pls

Can you add IKAROS map for next version pls
Sure. But I don’t think that will be soon, as I have a huge pile of other features I want to work on. In the meantime it should work fine even displaying one of the other maps. Like, you can just leave it on Korea and the generated weather will work. You won’t get named locations, obviously.
The more people chime in here and ask for IKAROS support, the farther up the list it will move.

Thanks, and Ikaros map would be nice.

Love the weather ‘package’ option, it was quite a chore to click the ‘save’ 48 times (I use 30 min increments) for one day!
Also, not sure if its just me or not, but the new site/tool is fairly laggy when I have it open. I’m using firefox, will try with another browser to see if its specific to FF.

Yes, it’s laggy in FF for some reason I can’t figure out. Sorry! Any ideas welcome. Works great in Chrome for me - that’s the recommended browser.

Initial post updated with the first two videos in a tutorial series. The first one is a brief explanation of the BMS weather model. Skip this one if you’re already familiar, or read the (excellent) BMS manual. The second video shows the basics of getting some weather created.
