My Cougar Microstick Replacement
-
Actually, I’d REALLY like to replace the mouse stick with the pointing stick from a computer keyboard…I had a line on buying these direct once, but I’ve waited too long and now it’s seems they’ve gone OOP too. So I’m going to have to look through the thrift shops and canni a keyboard sometime.

@Red:
that is incorrect. I soldered / unsoldered enough of them with a very basic solder iron and basic solder. The solder TM used is pretty standard.
It’s difficult to unsolder, not because of the hi temp solder used, but because there are 14 solder points to unsolder at the same time. You need to unsolder each point and pump the solder out while it’s out. then you can rather easily unsolder the microstick from it’s PCB, place the new one and resolder it.
It’s no rocket science. all you need is this:

I’m considering to source 50 pots and offer them here. but considering demand became quite low compared to what it was, i’m not sure it’s worth itby the way chihirobelmo, nice outside the box thinking
Hi Red Dog,
Do you sell one of them ?
-
I would be interested in buying one PCB, too
-
I’m in for 2 sets with pots.
Greetings Martin -

Ministick on HOTAS Warthog is hall effect sensor pointing stick, so if You could by the parts from TM you may be able to implement the stick to the COUGAR.

There are a few Warthog switches I’d like to get hold of (like the WH CMS switch)…sounds like I need to e-mail them and try.
-
I’d buy two microstick assys for the Cougar if they became available again.

I have found relative thread on EDforum.
Real world slew controls
https://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=172929I once saw F-15 throttle at ebay but didn’t bid as I had no idea what to do with RL throttle at that time. If I find that next time I would like to get it and try implementing real slew control.

I’ve seen those too, and have wondered about grabbing one just to rob the switches out of it…but I’d like to know a bit more about how the switches work first.
-
Hi Reddog,
If you can lay hands on them I would be up for 2 also.
PLEASE tell us that you have a lead on a few!!!
-
The DIGIKEYS and other primary component sources don’t supply this micros switch as far as my search found. However, it’s basically the same switch and push button used in Xbox controllers and they are dime a dozen off eBay. I bought one for like 4 bucks and it looks the same except not as much metal in the switch housing as the originals.
-
Hi Reddog
If you are making the switches put me down for 3 as I have 2 throttles which are a bit dodgy.
I have actually tried to do it myself but have run into issues. I]got a couple of the PS4/XBOX 360 controllers to try and do the mod.
Firstly they are way different sizes and the pins are not in the same positions. Also the pins for the switch are a fair bit shorter than for the XY axis.
So I think to myself will have to try to mount it on a universal pcb and try to wire it myself. However run into a problem there as well.
The build of the unit seems to be a weird size, when you have 3 pins of one of the pots in the holes the tangential side is half a hole out!!! Ahhhhh!!
Cheers

I am very very interested in purchasing an assembled microstick replacement that is as plug and play as possible, since I do not have a soldering iron or soldering skills. If anyone has any available, message me.

Even if you can get a whole microswitch assembly, it still requires a bit of soldering to attach the wires the the PCB terminals.

Damnit. If I could learn to solder I would, but I can’t even learn use one in student accomodation atm according to my contract. I guess I’ll have another look at my own microstick as to why it’s broken.

What exactly is the issue with it? Not working at all? Spiking?

I acquired a second hand cougar throttle for a decent price that had a bunch of issues but the microstick was good (and my own throttle’s was bad). It was plug and play moving it from one throttle to the other, no soldering required.
So if you can find another cougar throttle with a good microstick you can do a transplant without soldering (I also don’t have the equipment and or skills for that.

Ah brilliant. Sorry for the mistake. I must be getting mixed up with the other switches etc.

@Red:

Wow, Really? I guess we’d all whish we could say that !!
don’t feel bad, welcome to the normality
There’s nothing wrong with being wrong. imho The bad from it is to be unable to accept we’re wrong, and it’s even harder on a forum media
cheersThe American version of solder braid is also called “Solder Wick”, RD. It’s a brand name but has become sort of a generic term.

Please, count me in for a couple of PCB, with the pots if change your mind on source them. And also that tool, which i have noh ide what it is, but seems it´s required to change the pcb.
I´m completely serious Red Dog, i have a small problem with my micrstick on the cougar no centering well. I wanted to send you a personal message, but you do not allow it.
Please consider giving those interested a way to acquire them. Thanks!
