Thanks everyone. Some very helpful responses in this thread.
I guess I should provide a little more detail. I currently have triple 1920x1080 in an Eyefinity setup with an R9 290X. With the graphics settings set pretty high, I get very smooth frame rates most of the time. But frame rates drop substantially (i.e too much) when flying over the FLOT or Pyongyang.
If I understand you all correctly, this is because of my CPU rather than GPU. My CPU is pretty old, so I guess I shouldnāt be surprised. I want to improve the frame rates, and had considered both hardware upgrades or alternatively reducing the screen area.
It looks like the best move is to keep the screen setup I have and to upgrade that CPU. Judging by the comments in this thread, it seems like I should get very good results with the GPU that I have, provided I get the right CPU.
Any additional thoughts?

It would help if you could tell us what kind of CPU you have and the motherboard specs. Might have to change that out if you go with a newer CPU.

Getting 45-60+ fps on an Intell i7 3.4 Ghz, Win7, nVidia 970 GTX 4gb displayed on a 55" curved 4K LED LCD HDR HDTV @3840x2160
-
Itās an i7 920. Old. I will definitely update the motherboard as well as the CPU.
Iām sure this is an important clue: reducing resolution from 6084x1080 to 1920x1080 made not a lick of difference to my frame rates. CPU must be to blame, right?
Any thoughts on an upgrade to an i5 6600K? Methinks thatāll do the trick.

Yep!
An i5 6600 (@ 3.5Ghz) will do just fine. And yes, I would say that your FPS will get a lot better than 2.66Ghz. Find out if your motherboard supports it first. Just make sure itās ok. Sometimes, moboās are fickle.

Over at viperpits.org thereās a guy, Redneck, that sells them. Havenāt checked but he might be active on this forum too.
On the viperpits classifieds thereās a second hand version for sale too. There are other options too but require own assembly. For example the ICP kit from viperpanels.com (beware, ordering might take several months to get shipped at the moment), or from Hispapanels. And then the PCB from vipercore.nl.
